They used particle board for the deck floor? Hmm, never heard of that but then again, I'm no expert. I do know that you're supposed to re-treat it every year for the floor and every couple for the railings on a normal deck.

I don't think you have to retreat the pressure lumber , do ya ?
I know the 1" particle board needs to be treated, I mentioned it to them then. They didn't do it. Now it needs to be painted. If anybody knows, jump in.

The only advice I can give would be to make damn sure you don't let Naptown's wife buy the paint.

I can't remember exactly what it's called but I do know they make something like a porch paint. It's for wooden porches, which is essentially what a deck is. I would think any major brand paint store would sell it.
I used it once in a paint-a-thon so I don't know how well it lasted. It was oil based. |

Partical board as the deck?
Just out of curiosity how is this deck installed? Is it in 4x8 sheets or what? The problem I see is the edges and bottom once particle board starts soaking up moisture your in for big problems. If you seal the top you have to contend with the edges and bottom. |

I don't think I'd use latex paint on a deck. Use Oil based.
When you're done, if its partical board.......I think you should get a spray gun and spray the piss out of the top and undersides with a good water sealer....A GOOD water sealer. You don't want III and his Mrs falling through when they're out having a poke while you're all eating dinner. |

I, too can't believe the particle board info. Surely that's a mistake.
You want something that is rated for foot traffic. Ask at your local paint store. If you have a Sherman Williams in your area, call me first. |

It's 1" thick, pretty damn sturdy too. I'm thinking it's that new stuff that is glued in layers. The floor joist under it ar 2x10". It covered over the top, so the only exposeure to rain is the outer edges .
In 2 years, it only has a weathered look, I don't think a good water seal would work , would it . Even after 2 years ? I was think'n a good oil bas paint as well like Iowanian mentioned. A couple of coats and have the bottom sprayed by paint gunat least once.

Good gawd! Particle board outside! Rip it up and replace ASAP! Even MDF is not good for a deck. Ask for Phils help or mine you are in for major trouble and soon.
I suppose you could alway apply a layer of felt then 90# rolled roofing over that. Thats what it is intended for. Dave

Are you certain it's particle board and not a plastic/wood hybrid product like Trex?

It's been 2 years, I'm not sure. ( I think Trex is it )It has a very rough texture like particle board. It has weatherd so much, but nowhere on the edges is is weak, signs of water damage, or spoungey like. It's solid across the deck and edges. Again, it has a roof over the top so the only exposure is the sides when it rains. I'm thinking if it is sealed well it will hold up. Keep in mind, she is 75 yrs old, who knows how long she will live and use it, but during family outings like yesterday, it was nice in the evening to use. Since I will have to pay for this, I do not intend to use alot of money, since I haven't much. Just looking for a 5 - 10 year option for the cheapest route Ican go.

Use oil based deck or floor paint, but it will start to expand and seperate on the sides and bottom because it will retain moisture and expeand and eventually fall apart

It's not the old particle board ( sawdust )of old, the shit you can crumble up in you hands .
I kid you not, this shit is strong, but it looks like some form of particle board. It does have some long grain texture to it.
