I think "homer" and "optimist" are mutually exclusive terms. I'd even say that some of the most negative people are just as "homer" as the happily blind. Maybe call 'em 'anti-homers' just to clarify things, but bitching constantly with tunnelvision is just as 'homer' as the most ardent red-and-gold begoggled guy drooling over Vonnie Holliday and Dexter McCleon.

As for me, I'm optimistic, but I don't think it has anything to do with being a 'homer'. I'm more objective than that.

I was an optimist before, but now I can be that way in the open without too much irritation to others.

I think moves have been made this offseason that have given me much hope for a lot of success next year. This is the first time in a long time I've been able to say that with complete conviction.

I'm a homer for sure but at least I have a boner to see King Carl hit the bricks. That makes me less of a homer than you.

Great point, too bad I did not hire you as a consultant before I started this thread.

Maybe Russ will come along and be willing to fix my thread question by replacing the word homer with the word optimist.

I'm not going to list all of the things I think can/are going to go wrong because I don't want to be blamed for jinxing it.

I have very serious doubts that there will be a Super Bowl victory party in KC in the next 5 years.

Now, that doesn't mean I don't think they made good moves this offseason. I just don't think it will be enough and there are certain things the offense has counted on for three years that are very unlikely to continue.

'Nuff said..

[edit] I guess maybe my point is that I'm still pissed that they squandered the last 3 years? [/edit]

I wouldn't sweat it. I don't know why exactly I decided to wax eloquent on the meaning of "homer".

I think it would be hard to not be optimistic this summer, however. Important thing now is to stay healthy.

Well it is just your point applied to me so perfectly last year that I immediately understood what you meant. I was still a homer even though I was about as negative as you could be on our chances.

My biggest concern is that the offense will go in the tank before the new defense has a chance to get its collective shit together. I think this coming season is now or never.

So I feel good about the coming season. After that, we're probably engaged in major rebuilding on the offensive side, and that's it, at least for a few years.

So basically its now or never. Time to quit fucking around and get it done. I want to be wearing a World Champions shirt before we degenerate into hell.

I think that depends a lot on how guys already on the roster perform when given the opportunity. We have been building for the future on offense, too. We've seen Larry Johnson, at least briefly. He looks capable. We have some tackles we're comfortable with (Black and Sampson) and we have some young guards. We have at least one young receiver in Parker. We have Kris Wilson. Tony Gonzalez isn't going anywhere. I think that there may be a transitional phase as the old makes way for the new, but there's a decent chance that we won't have to really rebuild. The only things we don't have are a replacement for T-Rich and a definite QB in line after Green. And we've done well with inexpensive free agent acquisition on that side of the ball, so we shouldn't have too much trouble filling in whatever holes are left.

well, I erased a long ass post....

the point being, we're actually set up pretty good for the next 2-3 years...we acquired young talent this offseason with the exception of Knight...the key, imho, is both Sims and Siavii panning out (a big "if")

if they do- if!- then all we have to worry about for the next 3 years is:

a QBOTF (Trent is good for 2-3 years)
a LT (I think Welbourne can replace Shields, Roaf probably has 2 years)
a CB (to replace Warfield, and/or play nickle)
a #1 WR

we've got relatively young players (5 or more years left) in:

LJ
Parker
Wilson
Allen
Bell
Johnson
Surtain (ok, but he isn't old)
Hall
Sims
Siavii
Black
Wesley
Mitchell (yeah, I know..)

and players with 2-4 years left:

Green
Roaf
Welbourne
Dalton
Weigmann
Gonzo
Warfield
uh, the FB we signed from the Titans

CP may yet pull his ass from the fire....but only if Sims/Siavii wake up...and we score in next years draft (OL/QB/DE/CB)....
