i have a bit of a problem...

i could use any advice anyone has to offer.

i have a 30ft well that i need to fill, with out bankrupting myself, i have been told that trash and dirt will do the trick but it settles after a few years causeing one hell of a death trap,

it is curently full of water.

has anyone ever filled in a well before

I could tell you how to do it, and I've seen alot just filled with sand....but this is better.

Don't throw trash into your Groundwater....

Many states/counties/DNR have grant funds available to help you do this the right way, and pay a large percentage of the cost.

The proper way to plug an abandoned well is to fill it with neat cement grout or bentonite clay. Whatever you do, do not fill it with trash and dirt. A stagnant well is less of a threat to ground water quality than a well full of trash. As Iowanian said, check with your local health department or DNR office on the availability of public assistance grants to help with the cost.

In Missouri there are cost share programs available through your local watershed agency or your county health department. They will also provide you with technical advice.

If possible, use bentonite clay. It hardens up like cement and is plenty cheap. What's the diameter of the well?

Its about 3ft at the top and bottlenecks to about 4ft.

basically you put enough bentonite or quickcrete in it to "plug" the well and then can fill the rest with sand/soil.

Do not, put garbage, tires, used oil and whatnot in the hole first. If its an ex or someone you don't like....put them in prior to the bentonite.
