Q&A with MIKE SOLARI - 8/8

http://www.kcchiefs.com/news/2006/08...h_mike_solari/
Aug 08, 2006, 2:13:52 PM

TRAINING CAMP

Q: Coach, do you sleep a little bit better with RB Michael Bennett in uniform?

SOLARI: “Michael Bennett will help us. We have a good group of young running backs. We look forward to seeing some other young men also compete. Running backs coach James Saxon does a great job and the backs are working hard.”

Q: Is the game on Saturday night a little more exciting for you being your first year as offensive coordinator?

SOLARI: “Absolutely. It’s going to be exciting. It’s a new role, I’m anticipating it and excited about it. I’ve been preparing for it for a long time, we have a great staff that will get it done.”

Q: You had a huge role in the running game and the Red Zone plays last season, it’s not like you haven’t game planned and done those things.

SOLARI: “The most important thing is QB Trent Green leading this offense and the offensive line and the backs and receivers. We just have a very veteran group running this offense. Again, we just need to stay on coarse.”

Q: What is your concern with G Brian Waters injury?

SOLARI: “Brian Waters is injured right now, but again it give the young guys and opportunity and we have some back-ups that we have to solidify, who is going to win those positions? You look at the glass half full and it gives them an opportunity to get those quality reps.”

Q: You are not concerned about him (Waters) being out for a while though?

SOLARI: “No. Brian Waters knows our system very and Brian Waters is a very talented football player. The most important thing right now is the development of the young players.”

Q: T Jordan Black has moved to a couple different spots and guard and tackle. How has he done so far?

SOLARI: “Again, when you move around you never get to hone in on the techniques that you like to do as much versus just sitting in one position where you can really detail it up. Jordan has the strength and versatility, he’s a fine athlete. He’ll be able to help us at both guard and tackle this year.”

Q: Coach Edwards was not happy with the offense after the four-minute offensive drills today. Your thoughts?

SOLARI: “We have to do better. When I say we, myself is included. I have to do a better job of detailing us also. That’s a part of it and we’ll do better next time.”

Q: If you see something going on with the offensive line will you jump in there an help out, too?

SOLARI: “Well, yes, I’m going to help whenever we need help. Offensive line coach John Matsko does a great job, but again if there’s an opportunity in certain periods and certain situations that I’m watching through I can help.”

Q: The guys (offensive lineman) say you miss them.

SOLARI: “I miss them, without a doubt. Again, it’s nice to be in charge of the whole thing.”

Q: Have you guys done any game planning for the preseason game at Houston this Saturday?

SOLARI: “No, we’re just going to run our offense. We will work on our skills and evaluate players.”

Q: How much different will the offense look this year as far as emphasis on the pass versus emphasis on the run?

SOLARI: “Again, the key is we still run the Kansas City Chiefs offense. We’re going to do whatever it takes to win the football game.”

I think you're reading way too much into that.

We've got a new OC. Roaf is gone. Waters is out. LJ is not always running with the 1st team.

It stands to reason that the offense is a little rusty or sloppy right now.

Heck, even GoChiefs, with his propensity for incorrect apostrophes, could have done a better job.

I don't mind a mistake here and there. Hell, I'm certain that my grammar isn't perfect. But that thing was full of mistakes. You would think that a professional orgranization would hire fairly competent people.

I understand your apprehension. There are some good reasons to be concerned about the offense. However, I think these guys have been together long enough to know the offense well. With Trent calling plays in the 2 minute offense, it should be just fine. In other words, I'm not gonna worry about Marty ball unless I see it in the first couple games of the regular season.
