Chiefs deal calls for additional $3.50 for parking

KANSAS CITY, Mo. - Chiefs fans will help pay for Arrowhead Stadium maintenance with increased parking fees.

A deal that won approval Thursday adds an additional $3.50-a-vehicle surcharge for ongoing maintenance, ending a conflict that started after the NFL said no to a $1-per-ticket surcharge.

The parking surcharge is in addition to a $1-a-car fee that was previously included in the Chiefs' new lease with Jackson County. Currently, the cost of parking starts at $20.

The new fee would not take effect until after Truman Sports Complex construction ends, likely in 2010. The fee also would be adjusted each season depending on how many cars pay to park the previous year.

County residents who buy parking for an entire season would be exempt from the surcharge.

Jackson County's governing body approved the deal Thursday and Chiefs Chairman Clark Hunt said the NFL finance committee approved it, as well.

The NFL reportedly rejected the $1-per-ticket surcharge because it determined that money had to be split with the other NFL teams under the league's revenue-sharing agreements.

After the rejection, the Chiefs proposed charging season-ticket holders $131 over three years, or $43.67 per year. But the season-ticket proposal ultimately was dropped after critics said it wasn't the deal offered to voters in April when they approved a 3/8-cent sales tax to renovate Arrowhead and Kauffman stadiums.

The county had demanded that the Chiefs and Royals agree to ticket surcharges for upkeep and administrative costs in exchange for the April vote to overhaul the two stadiums. The goal was to ensure that those attending the game helped share the costs.

The ticket and parking fees imposed by the county at Kauffman Stadium as part of the Kansas City Royals' lease remain unchanged.
