Coaching/preparation question
While I'm happy that we won yesterday (frankly I can't believe we're 2-2), I'm still not sold. First half was a travesty...again...and the only salvation was finally opening up the offense in the second half coupled with some inspired defensive play/turnovers. I'd like to see what we did in the second half carry over to next week and beyond before I start to feel comfortable.
Given the circumstances of the Chiefs resurgence yesterday, and the atrocious start of the season this year (and last)...does anyone legitimately have confidence in this coaching staff? Two items that immedately come to mind: 1. Why are Herm and his staff seeming incapable of getting a team ready to play in the 6 weeks of training camp? This year and last (and I seem to recall with the Jets as well), Herm coached teams don't look like they should even be on the field when the regular season starts. It takes them weeks to begin to play coherently. 2. Herm and Solari (though I think Solari is essentially a Herm yes-man) clearly have designs on what they want to offense to be/do. They want to be a pound-it team...but the Chiefs seem to do much better when they actually go downfield a bit, get the receivers involved, etc. and then try to run once they've back off the D. Why do Herm and Solari insist on trying to jam a square peg into a round hole, rather than honestly evaluating what the team is able to do best (i.e. why force the offense to play a style they're not suited to)? Getting to .500 feels great, but I'm still not convinced that the existing staff knows what they're doing, and I'm not going to be lulled out of what I think are legitimate questions/objections just because we've won a couple of games. Thoughts? |

Herm needs to make a decision on who he wants the QB to be.
Herm said last week that Huard is playing it safe. Huard knows that Herm hates turnovers so he isn't going to take any chances. Solari knows that as well and starts off each game very conservatively. It's only when they fall behind that the offense starts getting in synch. I think Herm needs to either play Croyle or let Huard play the game without fear that if he forces a throw he's going to get yanked. Pick a guy and stick with them.

I think it is because of the Dolphins curse. Herm believes in getting the monkey of an undefeated season off his back as early as possible in the year.
Besides that, like you said, 'Getting to .500 feels great.' But that's only true if you are below .500 before you get to it. I think those two things should make everything else perfectly clear.

It's always been said that one of the qualities that made Bill Walsh such a "genius" was his ability to tailor his system to the abilities of his players instead of trying to force his players into a system they weren't capable of executing. |

It took DV and Saunders about 5 or 6 games before they figured out what they had in Priest. Let's hope Herm learns faster. |
