Kansas Speedway Nascar race

Not a race fan, but Bowyer is from my hometown, Emporia, can anyone shed any light on what happened.

He crossed the finish line first, but he did not win???

The caution flag came out and froze the field. The race essentially ended as soon as the caution came out.

Who makes the decision to put the flag, from what i understood they had signaled a flag for 1 lap to go and than the winner ran out of gas, but he won.

NASCAR basically makes up the rules as they go. It's thier sandbox so they make the rules. WWE all the way baby.

If Nascar feels that its time to stop a race due to rain or debree or whatever, they will throw the flag. As soon as they throw the caution the field freezes immediately.

It wasnt always like that though. It used to be the first person to crosss the start/finish line after a caution was thrown, but the problem was people racing to hard and cuasing way to many accidents. It was a good rule. I like car crashes as much as the next person, but you cant put the driver in any worse danger then they are already in.

the controversy apparently was that Bowyer and Johnson (and many other racers) felt that Biffel had run out of gas, as he was coasting and losing speed. The rules say you must keep up with the pace car, and Biffel was not, thats why they passed him.

Nascar rules state your car must be under power when crossing the finish line.

Except under green. Then the first person that crosses the line is the winner. Remember Tony Stewart's finish last year at Kansas Motor Speedway? He ran outta gas in turn 3-4 and coasted to the start/finish line too win the race.
