1985 Monte Carlo Check Engine Light

Does anyone know where I can get some heat resistant black tape to cover my check engine light that won't melt and fall off?

I would prefer fixing it, but nobody knows why the check engine light is on.

No idea about the tape, Mr. Dinny Blues.

Have you tried shooting it?

If you really want to not see the light and not fix the problem, it would be better to take apart the dash and unplug the connection.

No, I haven't shot this one, but I shot a 1966 chevy pickup in 1979 that wasn't running right. Twice in the door and once in the side panel. It still wouldn't start, so I have since given up on that whole wacky shootin it thang.

2007 vehicles totally do not fit with my not driving a vehicle built in the same decade which I'm existing.

I was hoping some motorheads would have pertinent probing questions about symptoms and stuff.

On a car that old, it's probably a malfunctioning light. Is it running okay? Not overheating, good oil pressure, etc? If so, just unplug it.

Try opening your gas cap and then put it back on. Many times a vapor lock will trigger the engine light thinking it's a major problem when it's not.

Doubtful that this would be the case. O2 sensors in an 85 Monte were not that sensitive. Dinny, to pull the code from the ECM take a 2 inch length of wire and arc the # 4 and #8 terminal on the junction port underneath the dash. The check engine light will flash 4 times, (one, one, two) in three consecutive strings, it will then flash your code. How this will happen is it will flash the first number of the code then the second. So if it's a code 24, it will flash twice, then four times with a slight pause between the two. If you have more than one code, it will flash the first code three times then move on to the next. When it is done flashing them, it will flash the all clear code of one, one, two again.
You can then call any Chevy dealer and they will tell you what the code means.

Or, you can get a free diagnostic from autozone.
Or, you can shoot it.

The #4 and #8 terminal will be much easier to find if you can help me locate the junction port underneath the dash.

Or you can post what the code #'s were and I'll look them up for you. I have a book that should have all of the codes for your car.

Or I guess you could just send me a PM .
