Walter Winchell

I noticed Rufus compared Whitlock to some guy named "Walter Winchell" in one of his stupid articles, so I went digging on wikipedia and read up on him. Interesting guy that apparently invented the gossip column.

The way he died was kind of sad:

I hadn't heard his name for a while until I recently read Philip Roth's 'Plot Against America,' where he runs for the presidency against Charles Lindbergh.

no, no, no ..... he is the dude that came up with the idea of pairing the wind velocity with the temperature and coming up with a combined, "effective" temperature.

I'd feel bad for the guy if it wasn't for all the lives he helped Sen. Joseph McCarthy destroy. He wasn't quite another "Roy Cohn", but he sure was a cheerleader for Tailgunner Joe.
