How much do you blame Gunther?
Yes, we dont have talent at key positions, but still this D has the same problems it did when he got here.

Doe our talent suck or does he not develop it properly?

How much do you blame him for the defensive failures?

Well, I've been harsh on him, and not that he's lighting the world on fire... but so far the defense holds up for a while before it finally caves in about the 2nd or 3rd quarter.

Which can be expected when your offense doesn't really gain any positive yards or first downs until halfway through the game.

Our defense would be fine if they could get some rest. But with our 3 and out policy on offense it doesn't look like that will happen any time soon!

Way too many people on this site are concerned about "developing" players.

The bottom line is that talented college player shouldn't NEED much development. We're not talking about Pee-Wee football players stepping into the NFL. We're talking big-time college players.

Look at Flowers, Carr, Dorsey, LJ, Gonzales, etc. and so on. Great NFL coaching isn't what's made them good players out of the gate. They had massive amounts of talent before ever stepping foot in the NFL. All they needed was experience to learn from.

You can tell a guy to turn his head every single day of his life (see Bartee) but either he's got the talent to play (i.e., turn his head and defend) or he doesn't.

That being said, Gunther has sucked as a D-coordinator since 1998. He would have that job anywhere else in the NFL (as evidenced by his stint as LBer coach in Tennessee).

He should have never been brought back.

It would be nice if the lb's would stay in the lanes they are supposed to be to prevent getting trapped out of position and then giving up the big, back breaking run.

It would also be very nice if they wrapped up when they tackled. Yeah, it is a good highlight to throw your shoulder into someone to know them down, but it would be better to make a sure tackle. Wouldn't it?

IMO Gunther should go at the end of the season if the run defense does not get fixed by mid-season.
