Chiefs call on Bunting for help
Former UNC coach now a consultant

Neil Amato, Correspondent

Former North Carolina coach John Bunting got back in the game this season, analyzing ACC football on the radio.
Now, he's back into game-planning, at one of his previous NFL coaching stops.

Bunting is working temporarily for the Kansas City Chiefs, acting as "an extra set of eyes" for people he knows well.

Carl Peterson, the Chiefs' president and general manager, gave Bunting a call earlier this month to see if he'd be willing to help. Bunting, who coached the Tar Heels from 2001 to 2006 and coached in Kansas City from 1993 to 1996, hated to leave his radio gig but wanted to help the Chiefs.

"I'm back here as a consultant," Bunting said Wednesday morning in a phone interview. "I'm in every defensive meeting."

Bunting, 58, plans to work the next 11 weeks for the Chiefs, who dropped to 1-4 with a 34-0 loss to the Carolina Panthers on Oct. 5.

A Chiefs official confirmed that Bunting started work with the team after that game.

"I know almost the whole organization," Bunting said.

As general manager of the Philadelphia Stars of the United States Football League, Peterson signed Bunting, then a linebacker, to a contract and later hired him as a coach in the USFL. Bunting played and coached with Chiefs head coach Herm Edwards, and he has worked under Gunther Cunningham, now Kansas City's defensive coordinator.

"On game days, Gunther will be on the sideline, and I'll be in the [press] box, so that'll help him," Bunting said.

Bunting and his wife, Dawn, live near Wilmington, and he said he was starting to put down roots at the coast. He said he has served as a mentor at the New Hanover County Juvenile Day Treatment Center and joined the board of directors for the Greater Wilmington Sports Hall of Fame.

He called two games on ISP Sports' broadcast of ACC games.

"That is absolutely something I'd like to keep doing in the future," Bunting said.

Great. This is the asshole who recommended Ryan Sims.

ARE THE CHIEFS EVER GOING TO LEARN?

Just another one of Carl's burned-out cronies.

So the team has turned to Bunting since hitting is a lost art.

Umm, I would have to say no, not with this management and coaching staff.

I heard from some NC Jets fan poster that he set back North Carolina football for years.

Seriously, what is this, the Carl Peterson reunion tour? Get the gang back together for one last grab of Hunt money? How much cash is Bunting stealing right now? He's not gonna be here next year, they're gonna can everyone most likely. This makes me sick. Maybe we can hire Jimmy Raye as a consultant, the offense is struggling! ****!

Switch to decaf little buddy.

I really don't see a downside to this. If he can come in and help revamp this CF of a team, fantastic. If not, who gives a rats ass, we are the bottom feeders of the NFL right now. There is literally nothing to lose regarding this move. As a bonus, the move likely gravels Herms ass to no end, which in itself, puts a smile on my face.

What a ****ing joke this team has become. Now you are inventing or creating positions ? If there is a problem with the DC then fire him for Christ sake.

This just basically tells the defense that Gun has no clue and don't listen to him, imo.

I think the Rams had a similar position for Bud Carson in '01 or '02.

I was not being that literal. I am just saying we are engaging now in rather exotic coaching methods rather than getting someone in who understands what a tackle is.

IF we have a DC problem then fire Gun. Don't cut his balls off in front of the team and leave him around to pretend he is running the D.

Yup, for Peter Guinta. He and Bunting were Vermeil's Co-DC's for the superbowl year. Martz hired Guinta and Bunting went to become DC for the saints.

Why?

He's been pretending for years already.

Well, not firing him just shows what a spinelss organization this is.

If we have a guy in that isn't cutting it on the coaching staff, fire him. What good does it do to keep him around?

This front office is a group of fug-tards. Like a bunch of monkeys trying to hump a doorknob.
