Sony PSP - tell me what is the best

Getting my son a Sony PSP for Christmas. We have noticed there are different versions (1001, 2000, 3000). What are the differences? Any recommendations?

Also, we have some memory stick pro duo cards(three 1GB cards) sitting around (formerly in cell phones) that need a use. Will any of these take this type of memory card?

I think the 3000 is the newest, and probably the best.

1001 - the "fat" PSP. No problems with it really, except the speaker placement, they put them right under your thumbs so the sound is muddled.

2000 - the "Slim", just like the old one except slimmer, and they put the speakers in a better place.

3000 - Like the slim but has a brighter screen.

And yes, the memory stick pro duo cards should work.

So, speaker placement and a brighter screen are the only differences?

They memory stick duo's should work as long as they use MagicGate.

Unless you want custom firmware, the 3000 model is the best. The 3000 has some issues with scanlines/interlacing that aren't present in the 2000, but it still has a better screen because it has better color, less ghosting, and is easier to see in light. There is no real reason at all to buy a 1000 (phat) model at this point. They aren't even available at retail anymore.

Personally, I don't see a difference between any of them. I have the 1000 and the screen is more than bright enough. Remember, the brighter the screen the faster your battery dies. The battery live on these is not very good as it is so keep that in mind.

I run custom firmware on mine and will never go back to running official firmware again. The 3000 will be the most difficult to get custom firmware on as well. The 2000 and 3000 are not that much slimmer either.

The batter life on the 3000 is allegedly the same length. It's only a matter of time because custom firmware is a possibility on the 3000 as well, though it will probably be more difficult to install.

I don't think the difference between the models is enough to upgrade, but if you are buying a new system there is no reason not to buy the 3000 unless you want custom firmware.

I don't know. If I could save $30 settling for the 1000 I would. If it were me.

They've already hacked the 3000 - got to buy a special battery for it though.

The speaker placement on the 1001 annoys me enough that I would have to have at least a 2000.

The Datel battery isn't enough to install custom firmware. It can boot the 3000 into service mode, but by itself it's just a black screen and a red light. Someone needs to hack the pre-IPL hash process.

I must the be the only one that has no problem with where the speakers are. heh

The sound sucks unless you have headphones on so I don't see the problem. I have played a 3000 and the sound was no better out of the tin can speakers.
