NCAA mulls tougher taunting penalties

Associated Press

INDIANAPOLIS -- The NCAA football rules committee wants coaches to debate turning some dead-ball celebration penalties into live-ball fouls, which could result in taking points off the scoreboard.

Chairman Mike Bellotti, Oregon's coach, cautioned this was not yet a formal proposal and is not likely to take effect for at least two years.

The committee wants to gauge support among coaches. If the rule was eventually changed, players who begin taunting opponents before reaching the end zone could have those touchdowns called back.

The committee also suggested strengthening its sportsmanship statement. Under the recommendation, coaches could be disciplined by conferences or schools for repeated infractions that occur before, during and after games.

I can't stand the rule to begin with because the refs only call it when they feel like doing so.

I have seem some guys dive in the endzone where it looked like the needed to dive and they called it. I would like to see less of the it meaning more likely that the players win the game not the refs. Washington Huskies for example

I think this is a mistake. There need to be tough penalties for taunting, but taking points off the board is going too far.

You know what would be the bestest? If after a nice clean game of NCAA touch football all the players got together, and had a big group hug? They could the even have a circle jerk!

Seriously.. worst Idea ever.

Sportsmanship's in real danger, I think. Lately I've seen guys on MMA boards bitching about guys patting gloves before fights, saying that should be outlawed. I think people lose sight in all the chest thumping and trash talking that underneath it all, these are sporting events, and there should be an inherent degree of respect and maturity.

But I don't know if rules like are the way to do the job.

See its one thing to be fighting.. but totally another for celebrating. Cory Rodgers of TCU I remember once High-fived a kid in the endzone.. that's real detrimental stuff. Showboating is practically harmless as it is.
