Coaching Credentials

Former NDSU assistant Perles lands in NFL

By: Jeff Kolpack , INFORUM

The coaching gods threw an audible at Pat Perles. Almost three weeks after going from North Dakota State to Ball State, the NFL called.

He answered with a yes and today, was officially named an assistant coach with the Kansas City Chiefs. His exact duties have yet to be determined.

“It’s been a real whirlwind, that’s for sure,” Perles said. “If I would have known this would have materialized, I never would have left North Dakota State. You can never predict these things.”

Perles was an assistant at NDSU for six years. He left his offensive coordinator job for Ball State. But when the Chiefs hired Todd Haley, things changed quickly.

Perles and Haley grew up together in Pittsburgh. Perles’ dad, George, was an assistant coach and Haley’s father, Dick Haley, was the team’s personnel director.

Then why did you accept this job in the first place?

Also, as far as I know from watching Bison games he's been a solid coach for the team. Then again, this is a team that just recently entered Division I play and still don't have a conference to call home yet.

Where for art thou Romeo?

These signings make me sick. Like anyone, I hope they work out, but anyone is right to question all this handjob B.S...."Umm well, I've known him since he was 7, so he's in...and I used to work with his sister, so he's on DBs."

Haley won the lottery and is buying his friends cars....ah the American way.

The Romeo mention does make me worried about Haley (as a highly touted young coach) and Scotty P (as a Pat). Romeo and Weiss were the 2 brainchilds of the Pats, the most sought after assistant coaches in the world a few years back and look at them now. The sexy, young, genius pick does not always pan out. Hopefully things play out differently with the guys the Chiefs have pinned their future on.

That's the way the business world works and for good reason. People think they can learn everything they need to learn about a man in a 1-hour interview? Not nearly as powerful as Haley knowing a guy in person and having worked with him.

Look, here's the deal. Haley recommended people that he likes. I don't doubt for a second that Pioli did extensive research to make sure Haley picked the right guys.

I can't believe people would think that Pioli would hire somebody he didn't feel comfortable with as an assistant to this team.

Pittsburgh bitched about Tomlin when he came in.

Maybe some of these guys can really coach.

Benefit of the doubt is yours, Mr. Pioli and Mr. Haley....for now.

So, let me see if I understand.

You joined this forum about a month ago, have posted nearly 250 times in that month, to essentially tell us we have no life.

Does that about sum it up?

Gibbs stayed for six years, leading the Sooners to a record of 44-23-2 in that time. While he succeeded in his primary task--cleaning up the program's image--he was perceived as a coach who couldn't win big games. He went 2-15-1 against Oklahoma's biggest rivals--Texas, Nebraska and Colorado--and never won more than five games in the Big 8 Conference. Moreover, the Sooners were hobbled by NCAA sanctions. During Gibbs' first two years, the Sooners were barred from bowl games, and were also banned from live television in his first year. More seriously, they were only allowed to give out 18 scholarships rather than 25. He wasn't able to field a team with a full complement of scholarships until 1994. Even so, discontent with his lackluster record in big games led Oklahoma to force his resignation after the season.

Krumrine better have had his hands tied by the all time great LB coach Gun, because our front 7 has had the benifit of hand picked LB's and high first day picks at both LB and D-line... and they have pretty much sucked.

There was even a piece in the press somewhere from Brian Waters wondering why Dorsey was being used the way he was.
