Titans Steelers to open 2009 season

TITANS-STEELERS OPENS THE SEASON
Posted by Mike Florio on March 23, 2009, 2:41 p.m.

The next time the Tennessee Titans try to desecrate a Terrible Towel, they’ll have to deal with a house full of Steelers fans.

The Titans open the 2009 season with a Thursday night visit to Heinz Field, according to Ed Bouchette of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette.

The league is expected to make the announcement later today in conjunction with the league meetings in Dana Point, California.

The game will be played on the evening of September 10, and it will pit the top seed from the 2008 AFC playoffs against the defending Super Bowl champs.

Since 2004, the league has opened the NFL season with a game involving the reigning league champs.

When do 2009 schedules come out anyway? Seems like it should be pretty soon.

Usually when they announce the first game of the year, they also add in the other Nationally televised week 1 games, and the Thanksgiving Games, as well as the overseas game.

So that'll be today.

Final Schedules come out mid-April

That's because the supposedly tough Baltimore Ravens ducked playing the Steelers on opening night.

Steelers to host Titans in 2009 NFL opener

The opening games on the NFL's 2009 schedule are starting to take shape.

The Pittsburgh Post-Gazette reports that the Titans will visit the defending champion Steelers on Thursday, Sept. 10.

Then, a Bills-Patriots matchup may be in store as the Monday night opener for ESPN, according to the Boston Herald.

That would pit Terrell Owens' Buffalo debut against the presumed comeback game for Patriots QB Tom Brady.

The league is set to announce several opening-weekend and national TV games during the owners' meetings this week.

Titans-Steelers will pit the AFC's No. 1 seed in 2008 against the Super Bowl champions. The Titans defeated 31-14 in Week 16, and several Titans players stomped on Steelers' "Terrible Towels."

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
3/23/09

NFL ANNOUNCES PRIMETIME KICKOFF WEEKEND &

THANKSGIVING DAY GAMES

The NFL announced today its 2009 Kickoff Weekend primetime television schedule – including a Monday night “AFL 50th” doubleheader – and the Thanksgiving Day national TV tripleheader.

In a tradition that began in 2004, the Super Bowl champion annually hosts the NFL Thursday night season kickoff the following year. This September 10 at 8:30 PM ET on NBC, the Super Bowl XLIII champion Pittsburgh Steelers will host the AFC South champion Tennessee Titans, who had an NFL-best 13-3 record last season.

The Sunday night primetime game (8:30 PM ET) on NBC will feature a division matchup as the Green Bay Packers host the Chicago Bears. Green Bay and Chicago have won seven of the past eight NFC North titles.

On Monday night, September 14, ESPN will host a Monday Night Football doubleheader that will be part of the NFL’s celebration of the 50th anniversary season of the American Football League. The four clubs competing that night began playing in the inaugural 1960 AFL season. The first game (7:00 PM ET) will send the Buffalo Bills to Foxboro to visit the New England Patriots, the decade’s winningest team (102-42 since 2000). The MNF nightcap (10:15 PM ET) will be an AFC West battle as the Oakland Raiders host the three-time defending AFC West champion San Diego Chargers.

Continuing an innovation introduced in 2006, the NFL will serve up three nationally-televised games on Thanksgiving Day.

The early game (FOX, 12:30 PM ET) will be an NFC North meeting of the Green Bay Packers at the Detroit Lions. The second game (CBS, 4:15 PM ET) features the Oakland Raiders visiting the Dallas Cowboys in the Raiders’ first Thanksgiving game since 1970.

The Thanksgiving primetime game will be at 8:20 PM ET on NFL Network with the defending NFC East champion New York Giants visiting the Denver Broncos, marking the first Thanksgiving contest in Denver since 1963.

The announcement of the Kickoff Weekend and Thanksgiving games was made Monday by NFL Commissioner ROGER GOODELL at the NFL Annual Meeting in Dana Point, California.

The rest of the 2009 regular-season schedule will be completed and announced in April.

Whats worse is that the Cowboys HAVE TO host an AFC team for the Thanksgiving Day game this year (its on CBS), so the choices were: Oakland or San Diego.

Jerry Jones obviously pulled some strings to make sure that he had the easiest game possible on National TV in his new stadium for Thanksgiving. Imagine the Ratings difference between 2 potential playoff teams, and 1 potential playoff team and the Raiders.

Well they are looking for original AFL teams to celebrate the 40th anniversary of the AFL... not too many options when you are looking for the second team to host a double header (which eliminates an East Coast team).

What is the alternative option... Denver? The Chiefs?
