Too many freaking deer

We're on the road tonight, heading into Indianapolis doing about 75. All of the sudden my headlights illuminate a freaking deer standing on the interstate. No time to brake, I just swerved HARD into to the other lane (I knew it was clear). Tires skid and for half an instant, I wasn't sure I was going to be able to control the vehicle.

I have to say everything went perfectly. If I had to do that 100 times, I'm pretty sure I'd plow the deer or lose control a few times.

It looked huge, but no one saw if it was a buck or a doe. I only got a good look about half way up its back haunches.

Drove for the next 40 miles barely daring to blink, and flashing my brights a couple times a minute.

Saw another deer laying on the side of road, basically cut in half.

Seems like we need to have an extended deer season to thin the herd a bit, before they thin us.

Our neighborhood is crawling with them, Mr. cdcox. I live in a neighborhood that has pretty big lots and tons of wooded areas. A couple of nights ago, I was driving home in the dark and came upon a large doe standing in my street. I drove right up to her and she just stood there ... like a friggin' cow or something. Didn't move. Didn't run. Didn't leap for safety. Eventually just wandered off a little and I was able to drive around her. Crazy ass deer.

I feed deer corn off of my back deck everyday. I have about 10 or so right now that come in for breakfast and dinner. They are bringing the fawns out now so that means there will be 6 or so more mouths to feed.

Then it will be time for the 30-06 and some very tender baby deer steaks.

Last week, a doe came into the back lawn and started eating birdseed out of our bird feeder. I stepped out on the back deck and explained that the birdseed was for birds and that you are a deer - not a bird. The deer just kept eating birdseed and looked at me like I was an idiot.

Sometimes, I wish they still made Fruitwheats.

One of my neighbors kills at least one of the bucks every year. He has killed two 12 point bucks who were less than two years old.

Driving back from El Dorado, AR last fall on highway 82 about 2am, Bob Dole lost count of the deer standing around on the shoulder at 120. It was insane.

I do my part and shoot a couple every year. unfortunately, deer that live in areas like Fax's neighborhood get used to people and are more likely to just hang around the streets.

Swerving to avoid a deer is stupid. Even if you knew the other lane was clear . You could have killed yourself by losing control going 75.

It's a common scene around here too...see 'em splatted on the side of the road all of the time. I have been lucky a few times but I am usually very alert to watch for these lil' bastards. A few weeks ago I went into work at 5am and wasnt really awake yet. As I drove 70mph down the highway half asleep I didn't notice the doe standing on the shoulder of the road till I was almost past her...if she had decided to leap in front of me I would have rammed her. Gotta' pay attention.

Late last fall Motorcycle Drag Racing Buddy and I were in his Blazer headed back to C-Town on “Petrolia Road” when we came up on a huge buck in full rut, antlers cleaned, neck puffed up, standing in the middle of the road. As we approached it turned and dropped it’s head like it was going to charge us. MDR Buddy kept yelling, “Try it!” but pulled up to a stop in the middle of the road just a few feet from Mr. Buck. Mr. Buck then gave us a look like, “That’s what I thought” and sauntered the off road as if he had just proven his ownership of it.
