Upon Further Review - KC v. Eagles

I watched the game for the first time last night. It's interesting to see all the comments and then watch the game to see if you agree or not with the majority. My thoughts:

1. Eagles run blitz was just amazing. It was as if McIntosh sold them our entire run playbook. They out executed and out coached KC. They loaded up the right areas, hit the right gaps, stunted, etc. Brilliant.

2. I heard that in the preaseason one team was using a 3 second alarm on pass plays where a horn would sound 3 seconds after the snap so the QB would get accustomed to having to throw the ball quickly. KC needs that. Cassel didn't have much time, but when he did it was usually right around 3 seconds. He held the ball for 4 seconds right before the half and took a sack. He should have known he doesn't have that extra second.

3. WRs - Hard to judge on tv, but based on Cassel's reactions - they couldn't get open. Also, no yardage after the catch. 3rd and very longs Cassel often had to throw quickly because of pressure and even in one-on-one situations the WRs couldn't elude that single defender/make him miss/break a tackle.

4. DL - 3 down lineman - aren't occupying double teams consistently. Often they only had one blocker on them and they still couldn't collapse the pocket or beat the blocker. See the end zone view of long TD pass to Jackson.

5. DL - 2 down lineman passing situations. KC's 3rd down defense has been pretty bad yet they keep doing this 2 down lineman crap on 3rd and long. They don't generate any pressure and opposing receivers are getting wide open. It isn't working.

6. Amazing stat - 1st quarter - KC is the only team in the NFL to allow a TD in every single red zone visit. They were 6/6 entering the game. Update, 7/7. Update, 8/8. Ha, take that statisticians - on the 9th visit KC forced a FG! Improvement!

7. KC actually had a chance to keep the game close. The defense held on 4th down and the offense mounts a nice drive. It's 14-7. Maybe, just maybe, KC can make a game of this. 1 play later? 60+ yards to Jackson. No QB pressure, defenders running into each other. No speed to catch up. Game over.

8. 2nd half - IMHO, it was a case of running the ball to kill the clock so that the final score wouldn't be so lopsided. I love the fake punt. But why run it if you are down 20+ points and you are going to continue to hand the ball off for meager gains and not try to catch up? Answer, milking the clock another 2 minutes.

I couldn't re watch that one,I did go back and watch the Baltimore game again.I had really hoped to beat the Eagles, but with all the media deep throating, and ball cupping of Mike Vick they had already handed them the win before kickoff anyway.
It would have been nice to hand them a good old fashioned ass whooping.

He's right about the run blitz. On several plays the Eagles has 2 or 3 unblocked defenders in the backfield, and Larry had no chance whatsoever. This is what comes of falling in love with the draw play out of spread formations too much. And of course, having absolutely shit for offensive threats.

I equate the Eagles defense against the Chiefs to Tecmo Bowl when you choose the correct play and the defense "popcorns" the offensive line of the other team.

If you look back, LJ hasn't done shit since Roaf retired. We've got to get that OL fixed. The Chiefs were known for years for having one of the very best lines in the NFL.

Yeah and look at the O linemen we've drafted since Roaf,Shields, and Tait have departed.......Easy to see the problem.I know sometimes you can pick up a good O lineman through free agency, but year after year the ones who truly last and stand out are the ones teams get through the draft.

Good comparison. It did look like that. I remember one play where FOUR Eagles bust through the line and Cassel was sacked. Just ridiculous BS.

He should have that in one season. Look at what he's done in three games so far and all we hear is how his attitude is so much better and he's in such good shape. He needs some holes created to be any good.

I think the most amazing thing about that game was the Eagles blitz schemes. Consistently, they kept bringing more guys than the Chiefs could block. Which would lead you to think that we should have been able to burn em on some quick routes, but it really seemed like there were 15 Eagle defenders on the field. Those fuggers were everywhere...

...hope Clancy was watching that...
