Q&A with TODD HALEY - 10/7
Q&A with TODD HALEY - 10/7
> Oct 07, 2009, 2:47:27 PM TODD HALEY: “Good afternoon everyone. We officially started preparation for the start of the second quarter of the season today. It’s always tough coming off of the weekend but again we are making this a fresh start for ourselves hoping from that first quarter the knowledge of the competition we have played. Those are pretty good teams at a lot of different positions and areas. We want to take something from that as we go forward. “We’ve continued to fight it out. We’re not going to change course, as I’ve said. We believe in what we’re doing. It’s just time to find a way to win.” Q: Is this idea of quarters a tough sell sometimes, especially for guys who have been around and a lot of their quarters have seen the same result? HALEY: “Of course, it’s a very tough sell and the tough part is selling to a group of guys who haven’t had success. But that’s the way I’ve thought for a long time – to stay in the present tense and knowing if you can win each quarter and be 3-1 and 3-1 and 3-1 you’re probably making the playoffs most times. “It’s a tough sell but it’s what you have to do. It’s the way you survive. I made a point today that the Arizona Cardinals last year lost to the Philadelphia Eagles; they lost to the New York Giants last year; they lost to the Washington Redskins; they won on a blocked field goal in overtime against Dallas. “The point being if you stay in the present tense and you understand it’s a long season and you just try to get something positive going you don’t know what’s going to happen. It’s not written in stone right now that because we had the first quarter of the season that we had that it’s going to end up a certain why. It’s not scripted. Anything can happen. Teams have proven that every year. “So, we’re in the present tense. It’s the start of the second quarter and if we can get something positive going and gain a little confidence you don’t what’s going to happen.” Q: In the first two games it seemed like Derrick Johnson showed the kind of playmaker he could be. Is that what you want to see when he gets back to full speed? HALEY: “There’s no doubt that Derrick has a lot of ability. Has he played to that ability? No, I don’t think in my opinion and for a lot of different reasons and one of those being the inability to be able to stay healthy through a season. Derrick is fighting through right now; he’s fighting through some nagging things. I think he’s back to where he feels pretty good. He needs to turn it up; we need to get the most out of the Derrick Johnsons on this team.” Q: This organization has been down since two years before you got here. Is one of the things you have to guard against the culture of losing setting in? HALEY: “Yeah, it’s throughout the whole building. It’s not just the players; it’s not just the coaches. It’s marketing, it’s everybody. It’s human nature to fall into that trap. “Now, again I’m grateful for my past experience having been places that have turned around a lot of losses going all the way back to the New York Jets who were 1-15, 2-14 back-to-back to 9-7 to 12-4. I was there. I got to see it and be part of it. “Even the Chicago Bears from 5-11 to 13-3. The Dallas Cowboys had really fallen on hard times and while we never got to where we wanted to, a fumbled snap on a field goal, or who knows what happens that year. “Arizona, there is no greater example. There weren’t a lot of people in that building that believed things were going to change. It was, ‘oh, here comes another group of coaches. Here we go again.’ “It is a fight. But you need to believe in your way. There is obviously a bunch of different ways to do it but you need to believe you’ve been part of that, you know what it takes, convince your players of that, get something positive to happen. That’s the thing hurting us right now. You’d like to have pulled out the Baltimore game. Get a stop there in that lost drive or I don’t know if we’re standing here talking about it right now. “So, it’s zero, zero and we’re starting the second quarter of the season and we need to make something happen and that’s going to fall on all of us.” Q: What’s your concern that you don’t have a rushing touchdown? What does that say about the offense? HALEY: “Right now, our number one (problem) putting everything else aside is we need to eliminate minus plays whether that’s a penalty, a minus yardage run or a sack. We need to eliminate that. I guarantee and I’m looking for the stat right now but we’re probably last. “We’re doing some good things. We’re number one on punt, number one kickoff, net average punt we’re number one. There are some good things going on, but right now minus yardage plays ain’t one of them. “When you have a minus yardage play in a drive your chances of getting a first down go down dramatically. So, forget running down in the Red Zone. Forget all that stuff and concentrate on minus yardage plays and eliminating those and those other things will take care of themselves. Period.” Q: What are your thoughts on the old AFL and how do you feel about the throwback uniforms you’ll wear this weekend? HALEY: “I had some old helmets growing up and jerseys and things like that. I saw them at the owners meeting and I think it’s cool stuff, some of them are awesome, ours being one of them. “Those AFL guys, and Mr. Hunt being the main one, to fight and stay alive to keep it going and get it to where it is today is a big part of why we’re all here. I think it’s great. I wore a couple of shirts and hats in training camp and I like wearing them.” Q: Do you get the feeling that this game means a little bit more to Clark Hunt and his family? HALEY: “I just think because of the history it’s probably natural. All the Hunts, and I talked to Norma after the game, it was something that meant a lot to her husband and to (Clark and Dan’s) father. I think that’s just natural for them to carry that on. That this is the anniversary adds hype to it. But I don’t know if there is anything more important right now for us than to get a win.” Q: Is this the right time to play the Dallas Cowboys? HALEY: “They’re a good team and have a lot of talent. I’ve spent a few years there and saw it up close and personal. I wouldn’t say it’s ever the right time to play the Dallas Cowboys.” Last edited by Tribal Warfare; 10-07-2009 at 02:39 PM.. |

I know it's just an NFL cliche, but I don't like the idea of a Head Coach having to "find a way to win".
That's something I'd really like him to KNOW.

It is just a coaching cliche he's just trying to give a vanilla press conference and stick to the Pioli way of being secretive to piss off Jason Whitlock.

Here's three eggs, some salt, a quart of piss, and two medium turds in a paper bag. Now, make a cake.
Sometimes, when the ingredients are insufficient to the task, you have to "find a way" to make it work because the normal method isn't immediately obvious. FAX |

Is that DJ is soft and lazy. That's a damn bad rap to have as a defensive player. Any player really. |
