D-Bowe Returns … Tuesday Cup O’Chiefs

Everyone around the Chiefs football operations wanted to see how WR Dwayne Bowe looked when he showed up at the facility on Monday, ending his four-game NFL suspension.

Todd Haley was happy with what he saw when No. 82 walked back into the building.

“He looked good,” Haley said late Monday afternoon. “It looks like he did a good job of keeping himself in condition. You’re always happy to get back one of your best players.”

Throughout his career, Bowe has dealt with weight problems during periods of inactivity. It happened to him after last season, and even during the five-week vacation the players had between the end of the Chiefs off-season program and the start of training camp.

That’s why Bowe was taking a diuretic for weight loss. That’s what gave him a positive test and why he was suspended by the league under its rules involving performance enhancing drugs. Diuretics are often used by those who abuse steroids.

Under NFL rules the team was not allowed to have any communication with Bowe, but several of his teammates kept in touch and some who didn’t, were happy to see him return in shape and ready to contribute.

“It will be good to get him back; we can use all the good players we can find,” said WR Bobby Wade. “I think he’ll be ready to go.”

The Chiefs received a one-week exemption for Bowe, so they did not have to clear a spot on the 53-man active roster for him. That exemption is standard practice and the Chiefs can activate him any time before next Monday.

Will the Chiefs get him on the field immediately and available for Sunday’s game against Cleveland? Haley was non-committal about a decision when he spoke Monday afternoon.

“We’ll do our best to see where he’s at and get him up to speed,” Haley said. “I think Dwayne was making tremendous strides when the suspension occurred and I think he’s made strides in all areas to a point where he cares about what we’re trying to do. We’ve got to get him up to speed in any of the new stuff we’re doing.

“I’m personally excited about having him back in the mix. We need all the hands we can get.”

Before he left for his unwanted vacation, Bowe had caught 33 passes for 466 yards and four touchdowns. A month of inactivity later, he remains the team’s leading yardage receiver and leading touchdown catcher.

“It will all be a matter of getting him up to speed mentally and getting him back into the mix,” Haley said of Bowe. “I know he’s a professional and from the looks of what I can see today and talking to him he’s done a pretty good job of keeping himself in condition and says he has. It’s what I expected him to do.”

Bowe wasn’t talking as he moved through the Chiefs locker room at lunch-time. But he was wearing a smile and was greeting teammates like it was a family reunion.

“I know he’s excited to be back and we’re excited to have him back,” said Haley. “When we get a chance to get one of our better and more productive offensive players back, I think that’s a big thing for us.”

Bowe’s agent Todd France made the point again for what caused his client problems with the league.

“Dwayne did not take a steroid or any other performance-enhancing drug,” France said in a statement. “However he took a diuretic for weight loss, which unfortunately has a negative effect under the league’s policy. Dwayne is sincerely disappointed and apologetic that he let down the Chiefs organization, his teammates and the fans. He looks forward to returning and putting this situation behind him.”

Indy WR Marvin Harrison ran all over the Chiefs defense, catching three touchdown passes from QB Jim Harbaugh (left). Harrison had TD catches of three and 37 yards in the first quarter and then a fourth quarter scoring play of five yards. He finished with six catches for 103 yards. FB Kimble Anders scored both of the Chiefs touchdowns on an 18-yard pass from QB Rich Gannon and a five-yard toss from QB Steve Bono. Anders caught six passes for 96 yards. Indy RB Marshall Faulk ran 20 times for 71 yards, while Harbaugh was 16 of 28 for 227 yards. The KC defense had sacks from S Mark Collins and rookie DE John Browning.

On December 15, 2002, the Chiefs fell to the Denver Broncos 31-24 at Invesco Field. A crowd of 75,947 watched the Broncos jump to a 28-7 lead that dashed any hopes of a Kansas City comeback. The Chiefs racked up 494 yards in the game and did not have a turnover, but they were unable to get enough points out of their offense. RB Clinton Portis (right) scored four touchdowns in the game, three on the ground and one as a receiver. Portis’ 66-yard play with QB Brian Griese gave Denver the 28-7 lead. The Chiefs got a pair of TD passes from QB Trent Green to WR Dante Hall, going 75 and 49 yards, and a four-yard TD run by Mike Cloud. In the game, Hall caught five passes for 143 yards. RB Priest Holmes ran 18 times for 161 yards. Portis had 130 rushing yards and 75 receiving yards.

Born on December 15, 1984 in Tallahassee, Florida was RB Kolby Smith (left). He was selected in the fifth round of the 2007 NFL Draft out of the University of Louisville. Over the last three seasons, Smith has played in 28 games, with nine starting assignments. His playing time was limited by a knee injury in 2008 and his season ended after five games in 2009 because of ankle injuries. He has gained 540 yards on 162 carries with three touchdowns. Smith has caught 34 passes for 209 yards. The Florida native has become actively involved in the Kansas City community and has spent countless hours with school age children who need some direction in their lives.

Born on December 15, 1969 in Beaufort, South Carolina was LB Wayne Simmons (right). He joined the Chiefs in 1997 after spending five seasons with the Packers, where the was Green Bay’s first-round choice in the 1993 NFL Draft out of Clemson. Simmons played in 20 games and started 18 games for the Chiefs in 1997-98, before he was released by the team for disciplinary reasons during the ‘98 season. He had 3.5 sacks and recovered a pair of fumbles. Simmons died in a single car accident on I-70 in Independence in August 2002. Police reports say he was driving his car at a high rate of speed and was weaving through traffic before he lost control and the car rolled over and caught fire. He was 32 years old.

Born on December 15, 1969 in Ypsilanti, Michigan was DL Dan Williams. He joined the Chiefs as a free agent in 1997 after four seasons with the Broncos, where he was Denver’s first-round selection in the 1993 NFL Draft. Williams played three seasons for the Chiefs (1997, 1999-2000), as he sat out the 1998 season in a contract dispute. He appeared in 42 games with 25 starts and contributed 23 sacks and recovered five fumbles.

I'm glad D Bowe is going to be back, think he can make a big differance in the game. Am allso glad he wasn't using steroids or any thing like that. I don't know why his Dr. gave him that stuff if thats how he got it. apparently D Bowe didn't know diuretics was not legal for the NFL. I didn't know that.
