Cassel's contract

Okay, he signs for $63 million over 6 years. Eye popping #'s but lets look closer....

We have an announced $28 million guaranteed for the length of the contract.

$10 million roster bonus last year.(Basically a signing bonus). USA Today doesn't list this in their DB. Info is from the KC Star.

2009: $15 million paid out in salary(USA Today database)
2010: $16 million salary.(Widely published figure)

I'm not down on Cassell. I think the jury is still out on whether he will be a successful NFL QB for the next 10 years.

Just curious with all the Claussen rumors and Pioli saying they designed the contract to have all this front end money in an uncapped year. But, was it also so if he flops, it doesn't kill the cap in the future?

Just what will it cost us in salary/dead money to cut him after the 2010 season? Looks like to me thats its not a cap killer. But, does anyone know the #?

2011: $4.75 million (+ $7.5 million option bonus), 2012: $5.25 million, 2013: $7.5 million, 2014: $9 million, 2015: Free Agent

Since he's already earned 31 million and they can save 7.5 million by cutting him in 2011, that leaves 24.5 million. I would guess maybe half of that at the most is guaranteed.

I could live with $12 million in dead money.

=$16 million left in guaranteed money paid for 2009-2010

We are paying Cassel $31 million over two years and only $16 million of it was guaranteed? No way. That guarantee # has to be higher.

There won't be anywhere near 12 million in dead money. They will have half that at most.

Well Pioli isn't stupid...I guarantee that...

He basically made it a two year contract where he is paid among the top QB's in the NFL...

and if he flames out after this year we won't be on the hook for much at all...

Because the point of a front loaded contract is to get the guaranteed money out of the way for manuverability later in the contract.

Good point.

If true, it would appear that we can dump Cassel after this season with very little negative repercussions at all.

Which, as I touched on in the other thread, would make having two quarterbacks with large contracts quite feasible.

So if this is accurate taking Clausen would not be a bad idea.

I'm on board for Clausen too. I just don't think he's gonna fall to us. I think that Cassel was a one year wonder. It sickened me to see how many 3rd down conversions we failed time and again with Cassel under center.

After this year, Cassel will have received all his guaranteed money. Now, there will be dead cap space..... but, the actual bonuses will be about 15 million. Now, since roster bonuses aren't prorated (assuming the new collecting bargaining agreement has similar cap rules as the last one), and the roster bonuses are well over half the total bonuses, the actual bonus that would be prorated should be less than 5 million.

This is just supposition, but it is based on published reports about his guaranteed money and the roster bonuses and salary.

Sounds like we can keep Cassell, draft a QB at #5 and still not break the cap. Then they can hedge their bets and hope one of the two work out for the next 10-15 years.

I trust Weiss as an OC and QB evaluator. If he thinks Claussen is the real deal...Haley and Pioli need to seriously consider it.
