2nd round mock

I did my first round mock here. This second round mock will be based off that first one.

I know it's super early to do this. This is just an intellectual exercise for my best estimations as to what should benefit each team.

Ultimately, it's hard to know who the Chiefs could pick because we pick so deep in each round. I think the best deal is to try to just see what all the other teams might do, and then see who the Chiefs would pick when they fall.

33. New England Patriots – OLB Sam Acho, Texas

Acho looks really impressive as a prospect, and has a ton of room to grow. The Patriots badly need to address their passrush.

34. Buffalo Bills – OT Joseph Barksdale, LSU

I like Barksdale a lot more than most people; I think he has left tackle potential. Gabbert will benefit from his protection.

35. Cincinnati Bengals – WR Leonard Hankerson, Miami

Hankerson is a playmaker in the vein of Marques Colston, and the Bengals just lost their two best receivers this offseason. Carson Palmer needs more than just blue collar overachievers.

36. Denver Broncos – DE/DT J.J. Watt, Wisconsin

The Broncos may like Justin Bannan, and drafted Nick Fairley in the first, but their front seven is truly this terrible. Bannan’s a depth guy, not someone you build around. A front line that has Watt and Fairley inside is easy to love for Broncos fans everywhere.

37. Cleveland Browns – WR Titus Young, Boise State

I don’t have Young down as the best player on the board, but he matches what the Browns need the most. Marcell Darius will be a huge boon to their front line, but Colt McCoy could desperately use a dynamic field-stretcher to open up his opens across the middle.

38. Arizona Cardinals – TE Kyle Rudolph, Notre Dame.

God the Cards would love to get their hands on a passrusher. But who’s available at this point? The swamp was drained in the first round. So they are going to try and get more help for Cam Newton as Fitz will continue to face triple teams.

I actually think Rudolph is first round talent. I just don’t give a shit about tight ends.

39. Tennessee Titans – C Stefen Wisniewski, Penn State
Since losing Kevin Mawae, the Titans have been as lost as the Chiefs have been since losing Casey Wiegmann three years ago. Wisniewski anchors what should now be a fastly improving OL.

40. Dallas Cowboys – DT Stephen Paea, Oregon State

Rahim Moore was really tempting here, as the Cowboys need a free safety something fierce. But seeing as there is a clearance on their DL right now, bringing in some new blood could be necessary.

Apparently the buzz is that Ratliff will start working at DE more than NT, and Paea is a great player to plug in at the middle in the Cowboy’s system in his place.

41. Washington Redskins – DE/DT Muhammed Wilkerson, Temple

Washington is such an inept franchise it literally needs the best player on the board at every single position. Wilkerson is the guy atop my depth chart right now in terms of remaining talent.

42. Houston Texans – FS Rahim Moore, UCLA

Texans have the worst secondary in football.

43. Minnesota Vikings – CB Ras-I Dowling, Virginia

The Vikings need help in their secondary, too. Dowling can man the corner and safety positions. His versatility is needed for this sad back seven.

44. Detroit Lions – RB Mikel Leshoure, Illinois

This pick comes down to two needs that would both fit very well. Do we go with a stud corner or a power back to keep Jahvid Best in a nice Jamaal Charles type role. I think the depth at corner is better.

45. San Francisco 49ers – QB Christian Ponder, Florida State

The choice here was between the productive Rashad Carmichael to shore up the 49ers worst position on defense, or to go for a slight reach in Ponder.

My philosophy on QBs is to draft them early, and keep plugging away until one pans out. The 49ers gave Alex Smith and Troy Smith a royal effort, but new coaches mean new QBs. I think Ponder is the kind of manager Harbaugh could go for.

46. Denver Broncos – CB Rashad Carmichael, Virginia Tech

This is good value for the Donks, who I’ve had plugging away at their 4-3 DTs for the first two picks. I like Carmichael, although I’ll admit he’s not a world beater. But his statistics are glowing, and it speaks to a guy who knows how to man the position.

47. St. Louis Rams – DT Jarvis Jenkins, Clemson

The Rams are building something special on their front seven, and it starts with that defensive line that generated so much pressure. The missing element is a block of cement at defensive tackle.

The Seahawks edged the Rams at the end of the season by pounding their run game. Jenkins is a 300-pound step in the right direction.

48. Oakland Raiders – OG/OT Marcus Cannon, TCU

The Raiders have to start investing in their offensive line, or else. Cannon is the biggest OL in this draft at 350 lbs, but he’s fairly nimble.

49. Jacksonville Jaguars -- QB Pat Devlin, Delaware

Another draft, another year of telling people the Jags need a QB.

50. San Diego Chargers – ILB Quan Sturdivant, North Carolina

For my money (which isn’t much this early in draft season), this is the best interior linebacker in the draft. A true sideline-to-sideline player.

51. Tampa Bay Buccaneers – OLB Bruce Carter, North Carolina

Tampa’s in the position of having to invest some more in their linebacking corps. This unit needs some major upgrades to get this defense competitive again.

52. New York Giants – RB Ryan Williams, Virginia Tech

The Giants used to have one of the best rushing attacks in the league, but now all their runners seem underwhelming or lack that explosion of creativity that Williams is capable of.

53. Indianapolis Colts – OG Rodney Hudson, Florida State

After Castonzo in the first round, the Colts continue to invest in their offensive line. The Colts heavily consider going defensive line here in the second, but the best defensive tackles on the board – Powe and Fua – don’t fit in their system.

54. Philadelphia Eagles – OG/OT Benjamin Ijalana, Villanova

The Eagles need to protect Vick, because he’s going to break down at the end of every season like he did this year if they can’t take some of those unnecessary hits off.

The Eagles need marked improvement at guard and at right tackle. Ijalana can man both positions.

55. Kansas City Chiefs – NT Jerrell Powe, Ole Miss

The Chiefs have their hands forced at this point to take a nose tackle. Powe and Fua sit at the top of my big board, and the other positions near the top (CB, ILB, QB) aren’t on the wish list for this team. It’s extremely tough because both Powe and Fua are high character Pioli players. Powe gets the nod because he’s a captain.

Now, the Chiefs could reach a tad and pick up OU’s Quinten Carter at free safety, but why reach for a position you sort of need instead of taking solid value at a position you definitely need.

The Chiefs front seven needs an upgrade also at OLB, but Brooks Reed is a huge reach here. Allen Bailey is a pretty good DE in a 3-4, but he’s not a Pioli player.

56. New Orleans Saints – NT Sione Fua, Stanford

The Saints need a ton of help on their front seven still. It should always start up front. With no passrushers here that I really like, I have to opt for Fua. Putting him next to Sedrick Ellis suddenly makes this team’s weakness a strength.

57. Seattle Seahawks – CB Curtis Brown, Texas

In case you haven’t watched any Texas games this year – they have some pretty bitching corner combos in recent history. Brown is an ultra-aggressive corners that would find a pretty safe starting spot on this crappy Seahawks defense.

58. Baltimore Ravens – ILB Martez Wilson, Illinois

I really would have liked to add a wide receiver for this team, but all the talent at this point is on defense. It was close here between Wilson (who probably wouldn’t start this year) or Kendric Burney, stud of the Senior Bowl. I like Wilson more in the end, as an eventual successor to Ray Lewis.

59. Atlanta Falcons – OLB Mason Foster, Washington

Great value to plug in on their strong side position.

60. New England Patriots – OT/OG Marcus Gilbert, Florida

It’s just not like the Pats to sign a guard to a bloated contract like they’ll have to do with Mankins.

61. San Diego Chargers – OLB Brooks Reed, Arizona

I’m not entirely convinced that Reed’s talents will translate to the NFL. But he’s good enough at a highly valued position to be drafted by a team that’s desperately looking for more pressure on the outside.

62. Chicago Bears – DT Allen Bailey, Miami

Oh how the mighty have fallen. The Bears went from one of the most feared defensive tackles units to one of the saddest. Bailey can excel as the uber-penetrator Tommie Harris once way.

63. Pittsburgh Steelers – ILB Greg Jones, Michigan State

Good value pick to plug in a damn good player into the best system in the NFL.

64. Green Bay Packers – OLB Jabaal Sheard, Pittsburgh

Meh, I think the talent pool is starting to shallow at this point. Not really thrilled about Sheard, but the passrusher talent is dropping off at this point, and they Pack can use a pick to try to find someone to play across from Clay Matthews.

Not sure Powe will be there in the second for the Chiefs. With so many teams going to the 3-4, you could have a run on NT's like you usually see with OT's. There are some nice players going in the early part of this second round mock. Will take a long time for me to believe we didn't screw up our second round picks last year.

2. I'm thinking people are overvaluing because of KC's dire need for a NT. Why wasn't he invited and/or participate in the Sr. Bowl or Shrine game?

Powe is going to go earlier than people seem to think. Remember the run on NTs last year, when guys projected to go in the 3rd-4th range like Torrel Troup or Linval Joseph went in the early-mid 2nd round.

I think there will be better valued players, in positions of need, than Powe when we are on the clock in the 2nd. I'd rather just pick up Fua in the 3rd than reach for Powe in the second.

I'm not sold on this idea that Hankerson is all of a sudden an early second projection. He was hyped up with the Senior Bowl but the Senior Bowl has rules that eliminate the answer to the biggest question about Hankerson... Can he get off the line in press coverage? He doesnt have explosive speed.

Baldwin, Smith, and Jernigan are all ranked higher than Hankerson and they are all looking at early to mid 2 projections and now people are getting high on Young. Thats quite a bit of receivers. The combine will most likely decide where Hankerson goes but right now I still see him as a late 2nd.

Awesome effort Direckshun! I really like the detail.
I see the draft shaking out a little differently, but I know you did the first two rounds a while ago.
For the Chiefs, I really am starting to like Baylor defensive tackle Phil Taylor. I know he has some character issues, and I am sure Pioli will definitely be interested in seeing if those concerns are more a case of past immaturity or a possibly precursor to future issues when he is in the league. If Taylor shows he has matured and focused his attention on being a dominant presence on the field, I think he could be an excellent option as a long term solution at 3-4 nose tackle. I was not a fan of the Tyson Jackson pick (and still am not), and I can’t help but think of our 3-4 defense with B.J. Raji at nose tackle, but the fact remains we need to find someone who can man the spot beyond Ron Edwards.

In the second round, I like adding a pass rushing outside linebacker and I noticed that Brooks Reed is still on the board. I talked about him in the Houston, Smith Kerrigan thread, so I won’t go on, but I think he might be a prospect that is flying under the radar as a 3-4 outside linebacker. I am very interested in watching how he does at the combine in the agility drills. I could see Reed being a “McCluster-type” of selection – a player that Pioli might value a little bit higher than most anticipate and feels he won’t be around the next time when the Chiefs are on the clock.

Another prospect I like is K.J. Wright from Mississippi State. Even though he played outside linebacker for the Bulldogs, I personally think he might be versatile enough to play either 3-4 outside linebacker or 3-4 inside linebacker. I don’t think he is necessarily an elite pass rusher by any means, but I do think his value is best as a good all-around prospect. I could see him being a solid third round prospect. Something that I have read about both players is that they are known for their strong work ethic, which is something Pioli certainly seems to value.

In the third round, I would like to add Missouri center Tim Barnes. Casey Wiegmann is on his last legs and like Ron Edwards at nose tackle, we need to find the long term solution for the position. I didn’t look to see if Barnes was off the board or not, so I apologize if he is not available. Like Reed and Wright, I have read that Barnes is highly regarded by teammates and has a reputation as a hard worker on the field and good teammate in the lockerroom.
