Couple of good articles on defensive philosophy

This is kinda like a masters guide to defensive philosophy in the NFL:

http://subscribers.footballguys.com/...l_idpguide.php

And this is an article explaining how the Phillips 3-4 differs from the Parcells 3-4:

http://www.bloggingtheboys.com/2010/...ats-a-phillips

With the money spent on Tyson Jackson Pioli has been setting the team up as a Parcells 3-4.

Yeah, I know.

My initial response was knee jerk and unwarranted.

That first article would serve a lot of posters well. Hell, they should make reading it a requirement for admission to the site; screw interviews.

Assuming Romeo does what he has done since being with the Pats, the Chiefs will be more of a hybrid team anyways. For all the talk about Belichick being from the Parcells tree, he ran a much more aggressive 3-4 at times and ran a 4-3 at times. It was more about game planning their opposition than anything else.

Parcells and Phillips were on the opposites sides of the 3-4 spectrum. However, Belichick is right in the middle. He may shade a little more to Parcells side, but not as much as some think.

Also, with Pioli here, and the focus on muti dimensional players, guys who can do multiple things well... I very much think the Chiefs will field a much more flexible defensive front.

If we can get Henderson signed I think we will have a solid rotation of guys who can all get it done when we need them. I figure Smith will be the back-up NT which actually gives us depth at this position which we had none of last year. That's already a huge upgrade. Henderson will be in a rotation with Magee and Gilberry as will Jackson, and that gives us decent depth as well, especially Gilberry who is a very underrated DE on our team. This team looks a lot better already if we can just sign Henderson. Pioli needs to start throwing money at him and get him a 3 year contract.

Dorsey can play NT. He did so in his rookie year. He can do it in the 3-4. He will be good at it. He does a great job with leverage and moves his feet well.

Coming out of college, people thought he was a good under tackle. Under tackle plays 1 gap and penetrates. He hasn't been used like that much at all. He has played NT in his first year, which is a two gap. And, he played DE last year, which is 2-gap.

I think he fits better at NT in a 3-4. He is strong at the point of attack. People look at size and weight, and they don't understand a 320lb guy at 6-1 is harder to move than a 350lb guy at 6-5.

It is all about leverage.

It will be interesting to see, but I think Dorsey will be on the nose this year. And, as I said above, I think the Chiefs will run a flex front defense with Hali coming on and off the LOS.

Let me say that I understand Dorsey isn't 320. However, if we get Jane Fonda Haley to lay off the weight loss mantra, he could play at 320 effectively.

I understand he's had 2 gap responsibility, and I also understand that nearly everyone would agree that it pretty much neutralizes the abilities that made Dorsey a top prospect.

I just don't think that's going to be the plan. It makes no sense at all. He's not going to play at 320. Haley's not going to suddenly like fat guys on his team.

Shaun Smith is your starting NT, for better or worse-and Ron Edwards is your #2. Dorsey and Jackson are your ends, with Magee and Gilberry in rotation.

Henderson's not going to be a Chief. Makes no sense for him at this point in his career.

While I agree to a degree, I'd say that Belichick is definitely closer to Parcells than to Phillips, rather than saying he's right in the middle. If 0 is Phillips and 10 is Parcells, then I'd put Belichick in the 7 range.

It is all about leverage, but it's also about pad height, strength in the lower body especially, etc. Ted Washington, who was a freakingly tremendous athlete, was a perfect 3-4 NT for us, and he was, amusingly enough, 6'5" and 350 pounds.

Wilfork is more a fireplug at the 6'1" 330'ish size. Either can be perfectly effectively if they know how to play the position. The point is the ability (strength, leverage, etc.) to take on double teams and not get moved out of the way quickly.
