Does anyone own any of the E-Readers?

I'm looking at getting one for my wife (Barnes and Noble's Nook) and I wanted to see if there are any recommendations out there.

My co-worker owns a Nook and he loves it. It is probably a good time to buy one both Amazon and B&N dropped their prices.

Do you know if he owns the Wi-Fi Nook or the 3G/Wi-FI Nook?

We have a Kindle. I haven't used any of the other e-readers, so I have no frame of reference, but I really like the Kindle. I also don't do anything fancy with it. I think the most advanced I get is highlighting words for their definition (it does this automatically) and then saving them for later.

I have a nook and like it a lot.

My suggestions:

1) If you're going to buy a lot of books, go with the Amazon Kindle because they seem even in how they price books. BN is getting even but for a while after I purchased mine (in March) they were erratic and often times more expensive than Amazon.

2) If you want e-ink but more functionality, the nook is the way to go. It's android based and currently has more features than Kindle.

3) Most importantly, if you are going to read casually with it, consider the iPad. That's probably the biggest thing I have found out. I read casually (and slowly). Because of this, the e-ink isn't as big a deal as I thought it was - though I do appreciate it. Hence, a device that can do a great deal more than simply read (and I don't consider browsing the web on e-ink to be sufficient to count as "more than reading") is worth checking into - even for the price.

You've probably already made your decision, but I figured I'd post this here in case anyone else on the forum was curious about a Kindle.

My wife turned on her Kindle two days ago to find that the screen was messed up. I called Amazon, and spoke with a person immediately (no wait). The customer service guy tried talking me through a couple solutions (each one lasting about 1 minute each), and once I told him neither worked, he put in an order to send me a new Kindle next day air. Then, he emailed me a shipping label. All I had to do was print it out, put the broken label in an envelope, and drop it off at a UPS site within 30 days. The next day, I was holding the new Kindle, and it was registered to my wife, so all of her books were already accessible on the new one without any hassle. So it was unfortunate that the screen broke in the first place, but the customer service was amazing, and the inconvenience was minor when I compare it to dealing with XBox's red ring of death, or other technology products. So the Kindle has that going for it too.

There was another one of these threads awhile back that had some good info in it. You might do a little searching around.

The biggest thing I got from the thread is that the Ipad is probably the best one out there and I am NOT an apple fanboi.

bought my nephew a Kindle ... works great as a basic ereader.

screen is freakin small though, i couldn't use it. You get to see about 1/4 of a page of a paperback book. You have to 'turn the page' alot.

kindle handling of .pdf style books is sketchy too. You really have to read a .pdf file with the kindle turned sideways because of the "size/font" ratio is screwy.

i converted .pdf ebooks to .txt intead because it works better.

i'm waiting for one of these new generation w/ 10" screen tablets that handle ebooks too.

iTouch Senior Citizen Edition ... hehe, didn't know that until now

My iTouch Senior Citizen Edition has worked wonderfully for an e-book reader. I can use iBooks on both my iTouch Senior Citizen Edition and iPhone, and have the same books on both. And it keeps track of what page I'm on automatically and wirelessly on both devices, requiring no syncing or setting bookmarks or anything. Meaning I can read 5 pages of a book on my iPhone, sit it down and pick up my iTouch Senior Citizen Edition, and when I open iBooks, it instantly flips forward to the page I was reading on my iPhone. It's not even necessary to connect it to iTunes. Very cool feature that I take advantage of a lot.

It handles just about any type of e-book too. And I can easily edit the book info or add a book cover pic in iTunes. iTunes will search the internet and download all info for the book.

The reading quality may not be quite as good as e-ink, but I've never had any issue with it. With the additional features you get along with the iTouch Senior Citizen Edition, and the price, I think it's a no brainer to recommend it.

For what it's worth, I've decided I made a dumb decision to get the nook. I cannot justify it any longer.
