Human Tackling Dummies

I hear a lot of people complain about the lack of tackling skills in today's players. Coaches say the problem with practice is they can't go full speed because they don't want injuries. Fine, why can't they learn with tackling dummies?

I only played football until Jr High so maybe you guys that played in college or pros can help me out here. What is so difficult about learning to hit, wrap and drive with your legs? I understand that tackling dummies aren't the same as a person but they can still be used to teach technique. Maybe they should get some ex-college football player volunteers, pad'em up and let them be the dummies.

if they don't know how to tackle at this level, then they can't be helped much.

It's not hard to learn technique on tackling dummies, I never had an issue with translating it to the field.

Maybe it's an issue of "want". They don't want to hit and wrap, but just give a shoulder or shove instead. You see a lot of this.

When I played, if you didn't wrap up on a tackle, you didn't freakin play. We only shouldered people going out of bounds. My favorite would have been when we got a INT and then you just clown some fool who isn't paying attention on the return. Although one time I did that to this big ol boy who was playing LT he was about 6'6 315, and his brother was there starting DE, he was a player, played D1 in college, he was 6'6 280 and I played both offense and defense.. Anyways we were running a sweep and that old chap about knocked the chocolate out of me when he blind sided me, although I was a sophmore and he was a senior it was still embarrassing. But he got some recompense for me drilling his brother.

The speed of the game contributes to the lack of sure tacklers in the NFL.

It's because they want a "monster hit".

In college, their speed/strength was probably enough to blast lesser players and get away with it. Now they are in the NFL where everyone they face is as strong, fast, agile, etc.

Plus it has to be a bit subconscious. Ever see anyone try to knock a door down arms first? They throw a shoulder into it.

I don't know what can be done to drill it into their heads, but I wish it was being done. I can't stand seeing guys try to tackle with their shoulder.

i think they have so much drilled into there heads that in the end just making or assisting in a stop is good enough even if it means a wiff or shoulder tackle.

I've always wanted to be a fly on the wall for film sessions watching this kind of crap. I wonder how much shit a guy really gets for that type of thing.

In washington they had a hammer trophy for the big hit and the player of the week on D got to sit in a big recliner for all the film/study sessions for that week.

If you blew, wiffed,on a regular basis you got to hear about...
