Cardinals sign Dockett to extension through 2015

The Cardinals announced during a news conference Wednesday that they have signed two-time Pro Bowl DT Darnell Dockett to a contract extension that runs through the 2015 season.

The deal is worth up to $48 million over four years with $30 million guaranteed, a league source told NFL Network insider Jason La Canfora.

“First of all, I want to take a moment and say I’m very thankful to be in this situation,” Dockett said in his first comments, before personally thanking Cardinals general manager Rod Graves and coach Ken Whisenhunt, who sat on each side of him.

“I’m happy. I’m going to be here,” Dockett added. “I’m excited to win games. You all are going to see me around here probably longer than you thought.”

Dockett said he wasn’t concerned about the extension that was being worked on in the background during training camp. The Cardinals weren’t expected to work on an extension with Dockett before the 2010 season.

“I honestly believe that if you want to have a winning program, you have to keep your guys around. The ones you can rely on through thick and thin,” Dockett said.
Dockett signed a reported five-year, $22 million extension in October of 2006 and was due $3.75 million in 2010 and $4 million in 2011.

Darnell Dockett Contract Details

According to Gregg Rosenthal of ProFootballTalk.com, here are the details of the four-year contract extension that Darnell Dockett signed with the Arizona Cardinals:

Option Bonus: $15 million (2011)

2010: $4.55M (up from $3.75M; +$800K)
2011: $2.35M (down from $4M; -$1.65M)
2012: $3.4M
2013: $4.45M
2014: $5.5M
2015: $6.55M

From 2011-15, Dockett has $250,000 workout bonuses ($1.25M total) and $500,000 ($2.5M total) in incentives. An additional $2.5 million escalator in 2014 with an 8+ quarterback sack in any season between 2010 and 2013.

Adding up the option bonus, and the base salaries, workout bonuses, and escalators, and it's $48.05 million. Of that, $40.3 million in new money, with $35.3M of that coming in the form of option/workout bonuses and base salary.
