Chiefs notebook: Chiefs extend Studebaker’s contract
Chiefs notebook: Chiefs extend Studebaker’s contract
Chiefs extend Studebaker Outside linebacker Andy Studebaker confirmed Thursday that he and the Chiefs agreed to a contract extension that will keep him in Kansas City for “hopefully a long time,” he said. Studebaker, a converted defensive end who joined the Chiefs in 2008, agreed to the deal earlier this week. Neither Studebaker nor his agent, Josh Wright, would reveal the terms of the extension. Studebaker’s previous contract was set to expire after this season, and Wright said it was important to get something worked out early. “Nobody wanted it to be a distraction,” he said. Studebaker had two sacks during the preseason, and he’s perhaps best known for intercepting two of Ben Roethlisberger’s passes in an overtime victory last season against Pittsburgh. “This is about team and winning games,” said Studebaker, 25. “If good things happen along the way, that’s how it goes. But I’m pumped to be here, pumped that that kind of thing happened and that I can be a part of this process. “Hopefully I’ll retire here.” Haley overlooks third-down problems The Chiefs converted one of 11 third downs in Monday night’s victory against San Diego, and coach Todd Haley said Wednesday that he was unconcerned with that statistic, saying it was better than having turnovers. Haley again emphasized the heavy rain and wind as a reason he opted to go with a conservative approach on offense, particularly after Kansas City built a 21-7 lead at halftime. “In that game, we did what we had to do to win,” he said. “One of 11 on third down was what we had to do to win. I’m not saying we wanted to be one of 11, but what we couldn’t be was five of 11 and a ball gets tipped and intercepted. In that particular game, with the situation the way it was, that’s the way it had to be.” Chiefs get thinner at defensive end Second-year end Tyson Jackson injured his knee Monday and sat out Wednesday’s practice. He was later seen in the locker room with a noticeable limp and wearing a brace. But Jackson isn’t the only Kansas City defender with an injury. End Wallace Gilberry missed practice because of a back injury. It’s unknown whether Jackson or Gilberry will be available for Sunday’s game at Cleveland. Other injuries Chiefs linebacker Tamba Hali (foot) and right tackle Ryan O’Callaghan (groin) were limited in practice. Barry Richardson worked at right tackle with the first-team offense during the portion open to reporters. For the Browns, quarterback Jake Delhomme (ankle), linebacker D’Qwell Jackson (chest), offensive lineman Shawn Lauvao (ankle), defensive back Derrick Roberson (hip) and defensive lineman Shaun Rogers (ankle/hip) were held out of Wednesday’s practice. Linebacker Marcus Benard (ankle) and offensive lineman Floyd Womack (knee) were limited, and long snapper Ryan Pontbriand (ankle) and defensive back Nick Sorensen (head) returned to full participation. |

Nice, and an indication that Pioli recognizes that Stude can be a long time contributer. The lack of hardballin' drama is a breath of fresh air too.

Smart for the chiefs. Dumb for Andy. He'll probably start at olb this year, what if he blows up? Then he's locked down.

Whoa, whoa, whoa. This doesn't compute. Scott Pioli didn't bring Andy Studebaker to the Kansas City Chiefs. He was brought here by Carl Peterson and Herm Edwards. A contract extension? Recognizing talent they didn't first spot? This is NOT the Patriot Way. He CANNOT be in the "Right 53."

You look at it from only one perspective. The other is that he could get hurt and never play another down in his life. I am sure the security has a huge appeal to him.

I understand the whole Vrabel is "a coach on the field" and a friggin Spartan straight out of 300, but every time Andy is on the field things happen, pressures, sacks, Int's...the sooner he starts the better IMO.

Like it. Lock him up long term before he blows up.
Just on the eyeball test on what you see, this kid can play. |

I like Studebaker alot as well and very happy about the extension but does anyone doubt that Vrabel's time out and experience on that 4th down helped the Chiefs stop them and secure the game? I'd like to see Andy play alot of snaps this year and learn everything he can from Vrabel and the coaches before starting next year.
