Mark Herzlich OLB Boston College

Watching an interview with him on Jim Rome is Burning. Still would like to see us sign this dude when the time to sign players comes along. Seems like a very smart individual... and one that has some game as well. Seems like a good fit for the right 53.

JMO, but I think this could be one of the undrafted free agents that could make a run at cracking a 53 man roster. And since our OLB spot opposite of Hali is not really set, Herzlich could push Houston and Studebaker at worst.

Those 2 are roster locks, so I guess it comes down to whether Herzlich would be a kamikaze on ST (likely), would beat out Cam Sheffield (??), and whether we carry 4 OLBs (probably).

I pictured him more as an ILB in a 3-4. Am I wrong in asuming this?

There was some talk about him before the draft. Here's a quote I found:

6. Brandon Fusco

I know it doesn't fill all the needs on the team, but it would go a long way towards solidifying the front seven into both an elite and deep force, and it would help the offensive line tremendously.

I don't see a lot of value at WR where we are picking. That said, if Hankerson slipped past 45, I think it would be worth it to move up for him.

The guy was a consensus first rounder before his cancer diagnosis. When you sign him, you're obviously taking the gamble that he could get back to that form. But even if he only gets back to 90% of what he was, he's still good enough to be a starter.

Not to be a broken record, but here's another actually discussing the Chiefs potentially taking him in the first.

If he did something like draft Mark Herzlich, I'd ****ing snap.
Sacc mentioning him favorably as our potential first round pick.

He ran a bad 40 at the combine, but if you watched him in the rest of the drills, he was by far and away the most polished guy out there with the best footwork and instincts.

And Milk is correct and he's saying exactly what I was inferring from the start of this thread. The LOLB in a 3-4, and specifically Crennel's 3-4 defense, is dropping a lot in zone coverage and is asked to man cover the tight end a lot. You don't want two pure pass rushers in this defense.

Like I stated, Houston isn't a good choice for this defense because we've already got the same guy in Hali, who is coming into his prime and has been a force rushing the passer. He's a proven commodity and it would be redundant to bring in another guy just like him. Neither Hali or Houston are ideal LOLBs in this system.
More from Sacc in a different thread:

Personally, I'm not that high on Smith. He's got an injury history and doesn't have any real experience operating as a stand up outside linebacker. I really don't know if the guy will be able to effectively play the strong side backer position in a 3-4. I don't like him as much as I do guys like Mark Herzlich, Jeremy Beal or Akeem Ayers for that spot. He's a project that you take because he's got elite level athleticism and hope that you can coach him up to the point where his on the field production/skill mirrors his athleticism. He hasn't shown Curry level capabilities of covering the pass or filling the gaps on runs. He's been a pure pass rush guy. I took him in my mock because it was a BPA/BAA situation. I really wasn't happy about it.

I also know that you think that Hankerson is a first rounder, but he isn't going to set any land speed records and has a bad habit of catching the ball with his chest versus his hands. He's a second rounder and will most likely last until the mid-way point of that round.

Powe...eh...It depends on who like who. Like I stated in another thread, there are only three teams with dire needs at the nose tackle position: Houston, Washington and the Chiefs. Everyone else would pick a guy as a luxury pick/depth at this point. Powe hasn't blown anyone away this year and it will depend on who likes who at that spot. There is a very good chance him or Lewis will be there in the third.

FTR, I'm not trying to sling shit by quoting these posts, just trying to gauge what people's opinions of him were prior to the draft because that's when most people were analyzing players.

4. Kendric Burney

I'll put that up against anyone's.

I feel like I substantially improved the front seven, and as a result, a horrible pass defense. The team should have more depth and dynamism from the rushers, the OL should be greatly improved along with added depth, and they have a reliable RB for the first time since Corey Dillon.

Dunno know how much "development" he needs to do over any other draft pick. The kids got a TON of talent. He will make some teams roster and Id bet he starts more than a few games.
