Allergies?

It's allergy season and I'm feeling the affects.

In the past I've used Claritin and Nasonex. Mixed results for me.

This year I'm going to try Allegra. More expensive, but if it's an improvement it will be worth it.

Any advice from other allergy sufferers?

Cocaine, which was used as a cure for morphine and alcohol addiction, was discovered to be a local anesthetic (LA) by Koller (1884) and was the first effective treatment for nasal congestion associated with seasonal allergies

Zyrtec works better for me.

They’re all available with generics. Claratin is loratadine. Allegra is fexofenadine, Zyrtec is cetirizine. If they’re really bad (pigweed in august ****s my soul) I do Allegra in the morning Zyrtec in the evening.

I’ve never used Nasonex but if I’d it’s a localized corticosteroid, I’d fire back up with it. I use Flonaise and it helps a ton.

Sinus rinses are also effective. Just make sure you buy the saline solution mix. I use Nielmed.

Shower at night. Make it as hot as you can stand if you have sinus congestion and hate blow that shit out before you get out. Then it will be as clear as you can make it before the flonaise.

Nasal steroids are generally the most effective single agent for nasal allergies. They are much more effective when used daily as well. The other second gen antihistamines are relatively interchangeable (Zyrtec, Allegra, Claritin), and I typically recommend them in addition to a nasal steroid.

There are also antihistamine nasal sprays, but they are Rx.

Another big part of it is reducing allergens in the house. Shampooing carpet, washing the dog, washing the linens.

*edit*

Reading a little above, I would not combine second gen antihistamines

Also, stay away from Afrin and its equivalents

SupDock brings up a point I forgot. Localized steroids won’t immediately help. Take them for a month and you will see tremendous gains in my experience.

Yep. They are “ok” to use as needed, but I usually recommended at least weekly if not longer as needed. A dose a couple times a week just doesn’t work that well.

I take weekly shots and use Clartin. For the most part it works for me. Occasionally I have the bad week and this has been it. Mainly the annoying post nasal drip.

My sinuses are so ****ed up it's like I've been snorting a gram a day for the last couple years. I use zyrtec and flonase but it only kinda works. I still get woken up EVERY God damn night because I can't breathe through my nose. The only thing that gets me back to sleep is affrin.

I need to cave in and see an ent, this shit sucks. I shouldn't need a batch of chemicals just to breathe.

I used to have that same problem. Started taking Claritin before bed instead of in the morning so at least I could sleep. Helped me out tremendously.

I was considering that. I think it's this stupid cat of my wife's I'm allergic to. I hate to say it, but I'm ready to be pet free for a while.

I’d try out each of the various newer gen antihistamines and sprays as it seems like some work a little better than others depending on the person. I use generic allegra with Flonase or nasacort. Costco or Sam’s are also great places to buy generic on sale this time of year.

Washes like a Neti pot are also pretty helpful for me as well.
