MNchiefsfan: Justin Houston is still an absolute monster

As per usual, it's mostly worth running over to AP to read this one and all the gifs. I'll provide a couple of the good ones as a sample, though.

http://www.arrowheadpride.com/2016/1...solute-monster

(the conclusion)

I honestly enjoy watching Houston’s run defense as much as I enjoy watching him rush the passer. He’s one of the best three in the league at both, which is incredibly rare.

Now, Houston is not going to dominate every game like he dominated the Denver game. Performances like that are incredibly rare, even for great players. It’s just impossible to do it week in and week out at the NFL level (if it weren’t, the NFL sack record would be about 45 or so).

However, Sunday was a good reminder to all of us exactly who the Chiefs are getting back on defense. He’s not a good player. He’s a GREAT player, one of the absolute best in the league on offense or defense. He can do everything (I didn’t even talk about his ability to drop back in coverage without embarrassing himself), and do it at a level most players can only dream about.

Justin Houston is back, and the ceiling of the defense just got cranked up a whole lot higher.

The Chiefs just kept winning without him.

When that happens, its kinda easy to just forget what a big impact he's capable of having. Then he showed back up and we lost (with him being completely ineffective) and it just reinforces the faded memories.

Until Sunday night happens and you remember that a couple of times a year he just absolutely wrecks the other teams offense virtually on his own. It's remarkable to look at how he pretty well single handedly did every positive thing the defense could manage last week. Jones had a good game and Berry had a nice play or two, the Broncos just avoided Peters outright but whenever something big needed to happen, Houston is the one that made it happen.

Just crazy how good he was.

My hope is that he'll be fresh from having played 9 (or more if you include preseason) fewer games than everyone else, allowing him to wreck shit like crazy going down the stretch (and hopefully into the playoffs).

Of course, the fact that he already has a shoulder injury tempers my expectations a bit.

That thing you see around Houston’s throat in the middle of the big red circle? That would be the arm of Donald Stephenson. Said arm is the only reason Siemian got that pass off.

I could show you half a dozen screenshots identical to the one above, including on two of Siemian’s touchdown passes (plays in which the only reason Siemian didn’t get sacked was due to Stephenson holding. Or, on one play, holding and then committing an illegal block in the back). I spent plenty of time showing multiple GIFs on Twitter of the multiple holds if you’re interested, but suffice it to say that the six holds I tallied on Stephenson were only the most blatant of the bunch. Had I included borderline holds it would’ve been more like 15-18.

This is so frustrating. You know that there is no way that the refs missed all of those holds. They just chose not to call them. Why??? There is only one answer. They were controlling the flow of the game and the league did not want to let the Chiefs completely dominate Denver's offense play after play. Which they would have had they thrown a couple of flags and let Stephenson know that they were not going to let him get away with it. But instead, they basically told Stephenson that he could cheat all he wanted and they would do nothing about it.

Na, there's another answer, which is that this particular crew decided to let the guys play. (We got away with a few holds on Von as well.)

That's still obnoxious as hell, though.

None were as blatant and consistent as Big Dons holds

Game changer.

Houston > Bailey + Howard. Especially given Ford's development.

A healthy combo of Houston and Ford, to go with Peters and Jones makes for one of the most promising young defensive cores in the league. There's no reason for this team to take steps back in years to come if all of those guys are healthy and on their current track.

So rare to have two potentially elite edge rushers that are both relatively young at once.

I don't see that as letting them play. I see it as letting the offense play and screwing the defense. 2 Touchdowns by Semen should have been called holds and came back plus a 10 yard penalty. Another hold was in the endzone and should have been a safety. That's 16 points in the Donks favor. Those 3 holds not being called changed the game and could have cost us the game. Fortunately, the Chiefs overcame and beat the Donks and the refs.
I imagine that you're right about us holding some too. I haven't seen it anywhere, but even if we did, was it as often and as blatant as what Stephenson got away with the entire 2nd half and did those holds directly lead to points in the Chiefs favor?

Yes. He injured his shoulder on the safety. But that wasn't the only reason that he was less effective in the second half. It was because the refs allowed Stephenson to hold him on every friggin play.
