Ten Things About Tonight's Game: Week 15 KC 30 LAC 13

Ten Things About Tonight’s Game Week 15: KC 30 LAC 13

10. Before I get into this week’s 10 Things, I want to tell you a story. At the Buffalo game a few weeks back, this guy sits next to me at my seat in the front row, and is kinda looking me over. I don’t recognize him, don’t think much about it. He says ‘Excuse me, but would you happen to be George Blowfish?” I was taken aback a bit and said “Who’s asking?” Well it turned out to be Twisted Chief. He said he’s read some of my posts on the CP and just wanted to say hello. So we suffered through that Buffalo loss together, shook hands and parted ways. So yesterday I get a PM, and it’s Twisted Chief. Seems he lives in New York, and had tickets to tonight’s game, but his wife at the last minute couldn’t travel with him. He asked me if I knew of anybody who would like to go to the game, his treat. His seats were just a few down the row from where my seats are. I thought it was a very generous offer, and thought of who would be most deserving. I happen to have a friend -one of my oldest dearest friends- who is a Chiropractor. We meet at his place over on 40 Highway by Gates BBQ before going in to tailgate most of the season, and he lets us leave cars parked at his office parking lot. He just got married a couple years ago, and unfortunately his wife has been seriously ill for about a year with cancer, and she’s had a really rough go of it. My friend hasn’t been able to go to a Chiefs game or Royals game for about a year, because he’s always home taking care of his wife. She’s been doing a little better just in the last couple weeks, well enough where they were able to go out a very short while for lunch yesterday, which also happened to be my friends birthday. So I called him, asked if he’d like to go tonight. He was able to arrange a relative to keep an eye on his wife tonight so he could get away for a few hours to go to the tailgate and game. This is his first time this year going to a Chiefs game after months and months of worry and frustration helping his wife fight cancer. So I just wanted to publicly thank Twisted Chief for making that happen. It meant a lot to my friend, and meant a lot to me to be able to get my friend some joy and his mind off his troubles for even a few hours. Thank you Twisted Chief, you are a good egg and a credit to the CP.

9. Phyllis Rivers is still our little bitch. He’s now lost eight straight to KC, and in his two showdown games against us he had one TD and Six Picks. Phyllis was held to 227 yards passing, most of that to Gordon on run after catch. Allen was held to 54 yards and no TDs, and his QB rating was a 49.2. Alex only threw for 231 yards, but had 2 TDs and ZERO picks. If this is the last time we see Phyllis, that’ll be too bad, because we’ve definitely had his number, especially in Arrowhead. Phyllis had ZERO passes over 20 yards to any wide receiver or tight end tonight. Gordon was the main offensive engine both running and receiving. He had a great game.

8. All the National Pundits had KC as home dogs in Arrowhead. They’re saying the Arrowhead mystique is gone. Michael Irvin picked LA to win right before the game started. BTW, wasn’t it nice to have Trent Green on the broadcast instead of Dan Fouts? I hope the Bolts fans hate Green as much as we hate Fouts. Announcer payback is a bitch. Anyway, pundits say the Chargers have been rolling, Chiefs can’t stop Ingram and Bosa, yap yap yap. Alex was only sacked once tonight, by Ingram. Bosa only had four tackles. The offensive line pounded The Bolts the entire second half. The fourth quarter was especially beautiful and Hunt ran wild, and Andy ran clock. The final TD made the game a three possession lead with only four minutes left. That’s the way you do it. Sutton shut out the Chargers in the fourth quarter. Great scheme, and only giving up 13 points was tremendous.

7. The Chiefs have been so maddening so many times. The key tonight was not to let the Bolts jump out to an early lead. KC put a stop to that, and got out to the early lead themselves 10-0. But then coming out in the third quarter, the Bolts take the lead 13-10 and everybody thinks, uh-oh, now Alex is going to have to come from behind. But that answer drive was big, and Alex threw a great block on a pitch out to Hunt to get them close. Hunt scores on a pass in the end zone a couple plays later. Then Phyllis goes all Crazy Phyllis and chucks the ball into double coverage, and Peters gets his first pick. More on Peters later.

6. Charger players were dropping like flies. They lost both starting tackles. They dinged up a tight end. They lost Allen near the end of the game. They had defensive linemen, linebackers and D-backs crashing all over the field. Seemed like the Bolts got about six free time outs for injuries. On our side, Chris Jones was playing on a twisted knee and Pierre-Louis hurt his shoulder, and that was about it for our side. Our guys just beat their guys up.

5. K-Hunt looked like a throwback to Marty Ball. He’s already rushed for 1000 yards this year, and broke Joe Delaney’s rookie record for 100 yard rushing games, tonight was number six. He also had 51 receiving yards, and was within the whisker of a ball nose of having a second receiving TD. (I think the refs got that one right, btw). If you watch Hunt’s final rushing TD, Albert Wilson just pancakes his guy into the end zone. Having K-Hunt back being like his early season self is a very, very good thing.

4. The Peters Giveth, and tonight, the Peters Taketh Away. He played his best game of the year, not even close. Besides his monster return on the first Phyllis pick, he ripped the ball loose from Parker’s fumble recovery, and made a great play on the ball for the final pick to ice the game. Even better, when the game was still in question with 8 minutes in the fourth quarter, Peters came up and put a stone cold stop on Benjamin, forcing a fourth and two. Next play Houston tips Phyllis’ arm, and Parker gets his pick. That tackle by Peters made that fourth down play happen. Eric Berry was talking to Peters right before the game, and near the end of the game he got a lot of hugs and back slaps from coaches and his team mates. Best of all, he didn’t do anything stupid to hurt the team in any way. Let’s hope his head is back on football. He was brilliant tonight.

3. The Chargers lost the special teams battle big time. They had penalties on punts, missed an extra point which shifted strategy in the first half, and screwed up downing one of their punts on the one yard line. Chargers had nine penalties; four of those gave KC a first down. Both teams managed 20 first downs in the game, but Phyllis was only 4-11 on third down. Penalties and turnovers were the difference. Bolts had three picks and a fumble. KC took care of the football. Chiefs Special Teams were better. Buttkicker got iced and missed a 52 yarder right before the half, but he hit three others, including a 51-yarder to put KC up by 10 in the fourth quarter. BTW: Buttkicker has now tied Nick Lowrey for most 50-yard field goals in a season with four…and he has a trip to the light air in Denver coming up on New Years Eve.

2. Kudos to the Arrowhead Crowd. Stadium was close to capacity tonight, very few Bolts fans, truly a Sea of Red. And it was hella loud. Crowd forced at least one offside penalty and a lot of confused routes by Bolt receivers. Phyllis kept blaming his receivers for his picks, as he’s been known to do. Chiefs coaching staff is superior to the Bolts, with the proof being eight straight wins. The other thing that struck me was that tonight, it was the Chiefs that looked like the experienced playoff team that didn’t get rattled. Bolts looked like they wilted under the national spotlight in a game that really mattered. Perhaps our playoff experience of the last few years is actually starting to pay off.

1. So here we are: If we can just win one more game, we sew up our second straight AFC West. We haven’t won two in a row (EDIT: EVER!) Or, if the Bolts or Faid lose one of their last two games, we clinch. I really hope we can pound the Fish on Christmas Eve. That would be a karma payback for the Fish ruining the KC Christmas in 1971. I’m still not over that one, my friends. It’s been a roller coaster season, but all that matters this time of year is who gets hot at the right time. My Christmas wish is, somehow we get into the playoffs, go to Pittsburgh and beat their asses in Ketchup Field. God that would be so frickin' sweet. Anything after that would be Heinz Gravy.

The people here on the CP are good folks. I’m very proud to be associated with you. Well, most of you. The DC Section is still a little scary. Hope you have a fabulous week and all your Christmas Wishes come true.

I don't think the Chiefs have ever won back to back division titles.

Great write up. One minor correction I think. I read we've NEVER one back to back division titles. Even going back to AFL days. I don't have high hopes of finally winning it all this year, but that is pretty cool.

That's what I saw. That's just crazy. Reid deserves some credit, assuming we don't stumble across the finish line.

I'm really sorry I missed watching this one. I'm sitting here at McCarron Airport in Vegas waiting for anything to reopen so I can get a drink, a cup of coffee or anything before my morning flight back to Phoenix/Scottsdale.

Glad to see everything went so well GB!
