Late night bullshit: outside the box trade idea.

I spend a fair amount of time in DraftPlanet thinking about the upcoming season. For one, I think this fanbase (and possibly the team) is obsessing a bit too much over the need for a true #2 WR as a top priority.

I think they should try to upgrade there, but with Mahomes playing in god mode, with two All Pro weapons downfield, and a Top 5 offensive line protecting him, they just dropped 500 yards and 42 points on the league's best D. So a true #2 doesn't need to be the A1 priority, I don't think.

Instead, this team just needs to retool the DL and, particularly, the secondary. They need a new starting DE, maybe two if they let Ingram walk, and they need depth across the entire DL. Danna and Wharton are the only backups that give you what you need, though we'll see what Kaindoh can do before long. And the secondary is a mess: Ward needs to be re-signed, the team may very well let Mathieu and Sorensen walk, and that leaves the secondary with Sneed/Thornhill and a bunch of 2nd stringers.

Normally I'd say let's trade down from our 1st to accumulate more picks, which we're going to need, but considering how dire our edgerushing situation is, they may have to trade up to get one that they like.

A solution to this may lie in the depth of the OL. Veach did such a good job packing on talent to the OL that we've got 2nd stringers who could start for other teams.

The best second stringer we have, maybe, is Nick Allegretti. Allegretti put a lot of play on tape last year, including the Super Bowl, and played a tough game against the Bengals earlier this season. He's a starter in the NFL, but not on a team with Thuney and Tre Smith.

Backup OGs are not hard to find for a coaching staff this good. Why not consider trading Allegretti this offseason for, say a 4th or 5th rounder, and continue pumping badly needed talent into the defense 1st and last lines of defense.

Combined with Poles, that would give us two additional picks to play around with, to use as fodder to trade up if need be, or simply to continue taking talent that could help keep this aging defensive line fresh.

Anyway, it's after midnight so you're getting some stream of conciousness thoughts tonight. But I think that's something the team should chew on, because I think Allegretti is a league-average starter who's not getting any play, and we need to convert that into an opportunity at a good player at another position.

I must have missed something, what does Poles have anything to do with draft fodder?

That's fine and all, but surely we can chat a little offseason when it's past midnight.

Allegretti isn't shit by the way; I'd argue he's a league-average guard. The way this league's OL have played in the past year, it's conceivable someone would trade for a cheap 1 year rental who won't break the bank in an extension.

Allegretti led all guards in touchdown receptions this year. It's crazy to even consider trading him.

Ryan Poles is the new GM of the Chicago Bears, and as a result, the Chiefs are awarded a 3rd rounder at the very, very end of the round, this year and next.

So you stayed up late and your out of the box trade idea is Allegretti for a mid round pick? Ouch

I didn't realize that. Veach can land a damn good player with that pick. I still want a bad ass WR like Cincy has in Chase. I'm not for thinning down the depth on our OL at all. Lets keep Mahomes supplied. Other than that I'm all for drafting defense in rounds 2-7
