The script has flipped

Defenses are playing bend don’t break, forcing us into ball control offense where we have to be virtually perfect.

Meanwhile, our D has turned most offenses into quick strike scorers.

It’s not gonna change until we rebuild the D.

Maybe we need to take a step back and regroup and recharge our batteries.

Do we trust Veach to rebuild the defense? Some people have said that he rebuilt it 2 years ago. If this is the result just 2 years later, why would anyone believe that this rebuild would be any better?

Yeah, when you have $65 million tied up to the guys who have not been performing to their known level, it's time for a reboot.

So when this season is over, Frank Clark needs to be cut. I also would very much hesitate on signing an extension to Matheau as well. I am in the belief that you shouldn't sign any defensive players over 30 to long term contracts.

Veach has really done a poor job from money to draft picks.

It would've helped if we could run the ball early, not sure what the hell happened there... again

I agree. If Mathieu can't play well in a contract year, don't re-sign him. I slap myself every time I bring up New England, but they didn't throw big money at defensive players. This team should learn from Houston, Berry, Clark.

That's a terrible approach as a blanket strategy. It absolutely depends on the player and the position and what is viewed as a long term contract. With that said, I wouldn't resign tyrann either. He's either not being used correctly or he's not been nearly as effective (probably a little bit of both).

Move on from Clark, Hitchens Reed and Sorensen. Find a free agent that has the same potential as Clark did when we brought him in at de. Draft some more guys there too. Find a safety somehow.

Biggest deal will be moving on from spags. I really don't care if we turn it around and win the super bowl, I highly doubt any of those guys are going to show enough to make us forget their liabilities.

Not disagreeing with you. But there are a lot of teams that also don't throw big money at defensive players and then proceed to suck. I don't think NE is the norm for teams that follow that strategy.

NE is also coached by one of the historically great defensive coaches in the history of the NFL

Rebuilding a defense via free agents and trades usually leads to quick decline. Not having top draft picks to get premiere prospects has hurt. And that's without the few top defensive draft picks being relegated to the bench or ending up as busts.

Sure, it depends on the player and the position. The problem is that player is not exactly a burner. He's still fast enough for this game, but it's his smarts is what made him a good player. But once his speed goes and his effectiveness (which I agree with you on the effectiveness part), well.... then you just have another guy who's slow, only much more expensive.

Look, I love Matheau and what he brings, but I'm very hesitant to really sign guys who is on the wrong side of 30 to a long term contract, without any protections in it.

Veach is going nowhere. There is no point in even complaining about it.

Spags and the rest of the D is far more realistic for change.
