I’m sure a few of you remember - a little before my sports watching time.

A line drive foul ball hits a four year old boy in the head at Fenway. Jim Rice, realizing in a flash that it would take EMTs too long to arrive and cut through the crowd, sprang from the dugout and scooped up the boy. He laid the boy gently on the dugout floor, where the Red Sox medical team began to treat him.

When the boy arrived at the hospital 30 minutes later, doctors said, without a doubt that Jim's prompt actions saved the boy's life. Jim returned to the game in a blood-stained uniform. A real badge of courage. After visiting the boy in the hospital, and realizing the family was of modest means, he stopped by the business office and instructed that the bill be sent to him.

Rice downplayed his dramatic role. “If it was your kid, what would you do?” he said. “The baby was crying and there was a lot of blood. I think he was more in shock than anything.”

Jonathan, who later graduated from North Carolina State University and became CEO of CustomerHD in Raleigh, North Carolina, has a scar over his left eye but no major lasting side effects. He has no memory of the event, but he threw out the first pitch the next spring and has since reconnected with Rice.
Quote:
“I’ve hit home runs. I’ve driven in runs,” Rice said. “But as far as something that stands out, it’s probably the picture when I went up into the stands and took the kid out of the stands who was hit by the foul ball.”

My first baseball glove was a Jim Rice model. What a great story, thank you for sharing

VARSITY
August 8, 1982.

I was 19 years old. I had finished up a stressful freshman year in college, and for some reason decided to continue the stress through the summer. I went back to my old restaurant job for the summer cooking steaks, and also took a full course load of compressed summer courses. I had two courses, one in computer programming and one in some sort of humanities. I never had a free moment all summer.

So on August 8th, I suspect I was just finishing up those courses, and looking forward to leaving my summer job so that I could have a normal college course load with no other distractions.

I was 6 feet tall and about 145 pounds. I wasn't dating anybody and wouldn't for several years. I was a fish out of water in the college environment.

Awesome all the way around. Great by Jim Rice and it sounds like that kid (lol, he’s 2 years younger than I am) has done something with his life. Love to read it. Thanks for posting.

Just an awesome story that I never heard about. I would have been 26 and had not yet developed a hatred for the Redsox. Jim Rice was a legend and a great human and even more legend now I have learned of this story.
