The Jets just called.

They're done suffering through all the injuries of Mekhi Becton. He's a good player, but he's just unreliable, and they have a good LT situation anyway. They're trying to make it work at RT, but it's over.

Now, right now the news says the Jets are preparing to decline his fifth year option. But maybe, if you (Brett Veach) make a handshake agreement on compensation, they'll accept the option and trade him to you.

He's entering the fourth year of his rookie contract now, which is $5m. If the Jets accept the fifth year option, he'll be $13m next year. So if the Chiefs manage to pull that off, they have Becton at $9m/year for two years.

Of course, next year the Chiefs have Humphrey and Trey Smith extensions to consider, but even if they extend both players, neither will be expensive in year one, which is the year Becton's $13m will hit. The year after that, their cap numbers hit, and Becton moves on (and Thuney probably does too).

Becton is a massive human, Orlando Brown-esque, but he's a greek god. He's super athletic (assuming his injuries haven't gummed up the works). He's insurance, perhaps, if Brown falls through, but honestly I was just considering him as a two year reclamation project, a Veach special if you will, at right tackle.

The biggest question is injuries, which is why the Jets are ready to move on. But the Chiefs have the best conditioning and injury staff in the NFL. They got Sammie Watkins healthy in January/February 2 out of 3 seasons, a minor miracle. They can get Becton to the promised land as well.

The Jets call and they ask: this guy's a stud, we just can't suffer through the injuries anymore. We'll pick up the option if you trade us a 3rd for him.

Do you deal!?

I wouldn't give them a straight 3rd in 2023. I'd offer a 4th conditional to a 3rd in 2024 based on games played.

I assumed that they wanted Brown as part of the compensation when I read the title.

Yes! He’d be a great RT. And have them throw Zach Wilson too. I’d love to have them both.
