Vietnam - Anyone live or vacation there recently?
In a little over 18 months I have the ability to retire.

I have begun evaluating places around the globe to spend my summer months and then return to the Phoenix area for winters.

I would like to rent a place for 5 months from May through end of September.

A place that has really caught my attention for both a great beautiful location and low cost is the seaside town of Nha Trang in Vietnam.

I have also considered the Philippines.

Would love to hear any advice or recommendations.

Sorry can't be of help. But if you look up Anthony Boudain's No Reservations show he did one from there. I found it fascinating, as you might have already found out since you are interested there.

I think a poster here lives there, his name has Vietnam in it.

I have a buddy that is returning to Thailand to retire (he worked there for most a decade)...he loved everything about it. Thailand is about 10-15% (?) more expensive than Viet Nam, but still about 40% less than USA. Do a little reasearch...the beaches, weather, festivals, are pretty ideal.

So, I've never lived in Nam, but I have been there numerous times on business. It's a bit too archaic for my liking. Infrastructure is poor. If you happen to get sick, the healthcare is hideous. Thailand has the best healthcare system in SE Asia for sure. I'd look at Thailand, if it's truly between those 2 locations.

I was completely grossed out with that aspect of Vietnam. They farm out 12-14 yr old girls like it's a right of passage. Just absolutely infuriating to see how accepted that bs is in that part of the world.
