Even though the early run on CBs almost made me reach a little bit, I'm going ride it out and stick with my board.

With the Vikings Spending big to sign Bernard Berrian so WR is out of the question. DE was a need for the Vikes at the end of the season and that was before it was announced that Kenechi Udeze was battling leukemia. So with the 17th Pick the Minnesota Vikings select Phillip Merling, DE from Clemson

With the 18th pick the Houston Texans select........
The Texans aren't happy with the way this draft has unfolded but in the spirit of Casey Printers, it's chicken salad time!
There were 3 DB's worthy of this pick, they were all off the board by the 11th pick. Mendenhall and Merling would have been the BPA's but they both disappeared from the draft board overnight. Let's examine the state of the Texans. CB is a major need after Dunta Robinson's hamstring and knee injuries which may keep him on the shelf for all of 2008. I'm just not ready to jump to the next tier of CB's to fill a need, that's how bad drafts are made. For years mock drafts have had the Texans draft a left tackle. E. Salaam and Jordan Black fill the depth chart at the position. Here's a number that might shock you, the Texans only gave up a mere 22 sacks last season. You can't get much better than that. They also employ the zone blocking system(ZBS) which devalues offensive linemen. Jeff Otah isn't a fit for a ZBS team, too big, too slow. The left tackle from Vanderbilt, Chris Williams, is an intriguing prospect. Very athletic and fluid and could play in the Texans' ZBS. The Texans have never really had a superstar running back and with Mendenhall off the board and the quality depth in this draft it's a need that can be addressed in later rounds. One truism that never goes away is that the NFL is a copycat league. Well, this year's champions, the NYG, featured a ferocious pass rush. The Texans have 3/4 of a very good defensive line with Mario Williams, Amobi Okoye and Travis Johnson. The addition of a player like Derrick Harvey would move their defensive line into Giants territory. The pick comes down to two players Williams and Harvey. Reach for an area that might not be as big of need as perceived or take a player at the top of the draft board? With the 18th pick in the 2008 Chiefs Planet Mock Draft the Houston Texans select, defensive end, from the University of Florida, Derrick Harvey. Last edited by Sfeihc; 03-07-2008 at 01:49 PM.. |

With the 19th pick in the 2008 NFL Draft, the Philadelphia Eagles select Limas Sweed WR out of Texas.
The Eagles have no star WR on their roster and this should give Westbrook some space to run (and McNabb someone to throw to.) |

Tampa Bay is enjoying its prospects right now. The two sorest positions of need, cornerback and wide receiver, are among the BPA remaining on the board.
The absolute BPA on Tampa's board right now, by quite a few slots, is Jon Stewart. They ponder taking him as a feature back with Graham and Pittman backing him up. They understand the desperate holes they are trying to fill at WR and CB aren't going to go away by drafting the powerful stud from Oregon, but it's almost too much value to pass up. Almost, of course, being the key term. Tampa Bay, in case you haven't noticed their activity the past couple offseasons and the fact that Jeff Garcia starts for them, are a win-now team. They believe they are just a couple winning pieces away from the Super Bowl. And considering the weak NFC, they are. Arizona CB Antoine Cason therefore, looks like the surest best right now. He's a battle tested warrior out of the WR-stacked Pac 10, and about as intelligent and savvy as corners come. There are criticisms that he's not the fastest kid on the block, but mark my words, watching Cason play this year, you won't even know he's a rookie, which is exactly what Tampa Bay wants. In addition to that, Cason is a gifted kick returner. Tampa Bay had their first return for a TD in their history last year, but Cason virtually promises more. Two serious needs filled with one pick, one who's virtually the best player left on the board. Tampa considers two other players, OT Chris Williams (who'd start at LT right away) and WR DeSean Jackson (Joey Galloways' heir apparent), but with Cason the Bucs will get a first rounder that won't play like a rookie, something you can't say for either Williams or Jackson, since LT and WR historically have needed a learning curve. There's no time for a learning curve on a win-now squad. With the 20th pick in the 2008 NFL Draft, the Tampa Bay Buccaneers select cornerback Antoine Cason from the University of Arizona. |

The Skins need a Wide Reciever, so that Randle El isn't a featured guy, but DeSean jackson is too little to be that guy. The top CBs are gone (We don't believe in Talib), so we now look to Offensive Line.
With the 21st pick in the 2008 Draft, the Washington Redskins select Gosder Cherilus, OT, Boston College |

Everybody seems to think the Dallas Cowboys need a RB. Jerry Jones has decided to listen to his staff, however, and the Dallas Cowboys select Chris Williams, OT, Vanderbilt.

Oh man, that's a tough decision to make, to pass on Jon Stewart.
I'm not saying the Cowboys need RB, but they'd really like another, and Stewart's by far the best player on the board by my measure. Yowza. |

However the Cowboys used a 2 and a 3 on OT's last year...I'd think they'd value WR and CB the most in this spot.... I really don't like some of these players and think they are going to high but it's all opinion right? I don't think Cason or Cherilus are 1st round players. I don't like Sweed either but he'll go in the 1st because teams get enamored. Yo Milkman you're up. |
