And a defensive end in the 2nd? (Runs screaming from the room.)
(Returns five minutes later.) Whatever you do, don't let Carl Peterson see this thread.

Huzzah! The Eagles are finally up.
And, well, they're not thrilled. They end up in this particular situation needing OTs, a SS, help at CB and DE (of which there are some candidates), and a dynamic kick-returner. The options are plentiful but nothing golden has dropped into the Eagles' laps like they had hoped. They first consider their needs. Obviously this Draft is bankrupt of OTs at this point due to the heavy pro-OL bent of NFL GMs this year. But a candidate for SS emerges in Wesley Woodyard, surprising considering how weak this year's field of SS's are. But while Woodyard is semi-experienced at SS, he's more accostumed to LB and will need grooming at the position. Still, he remains a top prospect at this juncture for the Eagles. CB isn't yielding any great returns at this place, especially on an Eagles defense that largely depends on them. But at this point the Eagles would be Drafting a backup, now that Asante Samuels is on board. The next-best CBs are nothing to rave about and are a hop, skip, and a very large jump down Philly's value chart. There are some great options as backups available (Wheatley may never be a starter due to size alone), but Philly is looking for best value. DE offers some options. Darrell Robertson? Undersized for Philly's end position. Jason Jones? A thousand questions. Kendall Langford? A thousand questions plus one. Philly wants best value. Then there's the available running backs, some of whom intrigue the Eagles. Brian Westbrook is an elite RB, but he's almost 30 and his backup's an unremarkable guy of the same age. The Eagles would love to find an even better compliment to Westbrook, but complimenting him is incredibly hard as he can run between the tackles and get outside. A pure power runner might be the best compliment for him, and Tulane's Matt Forte is a large back with great hands. Mike Hart is another great counterpunch for Westbrook, as he possesses similar qualities to Westbrook and has the tenacious mentality that the Eagles love. Smith and Slaton are both appealing to the Eagles but they're both pure gunners. So Philly's favorite options are as follows: SS Wesley Woodyard NCB Terrence Wheatley RB Mike Hart RB Matt Forte Anywhere you go is a gamble, so the Eagles opt for the player that yields the most promise for their future, and that's Wesley Woodyard. Woodyard is undersized (though incredibly fast) for a linebacker, and the Eagles plan to move him to a position where his size and speed are ideal -- strong safety, a position he has adequate experience at. His sub-4.5 speed and tough SEC attitude give him a leg-up on eventually taking the starting job from the dreadful Sean Considine. With the 111th pick in the 2008 NFL Draft, the Philadelphia Eagles select OLB Wesley Woodyard from the University of Kentucky. |

After losing Calvin Pace in FA the Cardinals find themselves thin at the OLB position and IMO this player offers alot of potential in that role in a 3-4.
The Arizona Cardinals select DE/OLB Darrell Robertson, Georgia Tech. |

Well here I am. Time to kill. So once again I dispense my useless advice on the peons below.
I think the Vikings have had a fair draft. They needed a TE, and got a good one. They needed a DE, and got a good one. They needed a QB, and I believe they got a good one but he's going to need good coaching. I think they could still use pass rushing help, even with the first round selection of Merling. People forget that the Vikings' best pass rusher only garnered 5 sacks last year. A could guys stand out to me, as their names have been briefly mentioned by both myself and OTW. DE Kendall Langford has drawn a lot of attention because of his monstrous size -- 6'6", 295 lbs. That's a huge guy. Normally, especially if I were a 3-4 team that needed gigantic DEs, I'd be all over that. But the Vikes don't play a 3-4 -- they play a Cover 2 4-3, which needs the complete opposite type of DE, a smaller undersized guy with great speed and pursuit. Believe it or not, a guy like that does exist at this point, in the form of Eastern Michigan's Jason Jones. This gentleman's still a bit large for the Cover 2 at 6'5", 270+ lbs, but he's as fast as all but the most elite DEs in this Draft. Obviously he's got a lot of technique work to go through as he pretty much just crushed his small college opponents with his size, but the Vikes have a good eye for defensive line talent, and pass rushing is of such monumental concern to this team that this is a very smart pick. |

Since the mods aren't updating this board for me to know that I was up, I guess I'll go ahead and pick...
With the 113th pick in the CP Mock draft, the Minnesota Vikings select Tyvon Branch, CB/S, KR/PR Connecticut The Vikings really like Branch's versatility. He can step in and be a solid nickel back, and could easily transition into a FS with phenomenal range. He can also easily be a weapon returning kicks, he has world class speed, posting the fastest 40 time (along with Justin King) of any CB in this year's draft. He's also praised for his intelligence and football IQ. This is the kind of player who could fulfill five roles on your team, and do any one of them well (and some exceptionally).

If any team were to benefit from the depth at the RB position this year, it's the Texans. They walked in with a few holes, but perhaps none of them as big as their hole at RB.
They'll find themselves picking after the Vikes, with a veritable smorgasboard (sp?) of worthy draftees. Probably the purest gunner of all these gents is Steve Slaton, West Viriginia's "home run threat" guy. He's not necessarily a between-the-tackles guy but he can block as if he were one, but that's not what makes him interesting. He's got nothing short of elite speed, and if he gets any light people won't be chasing him down, 'nough said. He's also a decorated kick returner, and a good receiver to boot. He's not a scatback, however -- he doesn't have an arsenal of moves to make you miss, he's more or less a by-the-playbook guy. And with measurables like his, he's tempting. At the other end of the spectrum is the fullback-looking Matt Forte from a much smaller school, Tulane. Forte is your workhorse. He's the guy you put between the tackles. He's the guy you put in goal line situations. He's the guy you want to get the tough yards that every team needs, the guy that can punish defenses. And he's a great receiver out of the backfield -- no RB that could be taken at this point has better hands. But the Texans' Dayne and Green both possess his abilities. The Texans are most likely looking for a Slaton-type. Which brings me to Kevin Smith, a guy from another small school. He's a pure gunner as well, but he's got more body on him than Slaton does. He's not going to blow away from the secondary as explosively but his body will allow him to take more punishment between the tackles if need be. Smith is more of your scatback with the ability to improvise, but every yard he's ever earned has been against vastly inferior talent than he'll see in the NFL. Smith is a workhorse back, though -- he was over 60% of Central Florida's entire offense. The last guy, and in my opinion the best, although I'll leave that up to the Texans, is Mike Hart from Michigan. Say what you want about poor receiving numbers, and say what you will about size, but the guy's hands are gold. He never fumbles. Never fumbles. Hart is your smart RB with the versatility to play in a variety of schemes, but I think he'd be most dangerous in a zone blocking scheme that both Houston and Denver, the next team picking, employ. He's also immensely tough physically, can take all kinds of punishment physically and keep trucking, and he's a tremendous mental presense for your backfield. I love him as the pick for the Texans. If not him, though, the Broncos could benefit from taking him. |
