I'm not a draftnik but what the point of trading for Matt Cassel and paying him 14 mio dollars for one year if you don't plan on him in the future. Otherwise there could have signed Byron Leftwich or Jeff Garcia as a stopgap solution.

Because he gives you 1 year of manageable play while you get your drafted QB ready? Because he gives you the possibility of drafting a QB and having 2 guys that might be franchise-caliber players? Because you kept him out of the hands of a division rival? Because you thought you could get him for a 2nd rounder and trade him for a late 1st?

What's the point of trading for Matt Cassel and making him you're QBotF if you're not going to give him a long-term deal?

Assuming the statement originated with Cassel and his Agent, the fact that it has even been put out there does not bode well for the 1st Messiah, as we all know how Pioli demands the Iron Curtain when it comes to house information.

Therefore, I hypothesize that only one of two scenarios can and will result from this:

A) Dream of the 1st Messiah's Faithful:
This is a bartering tool( though not a very wise one when dealing with Pioli )for a larger long-term contract, scripted by Cassel's agent to give the impression that Cassel could yet still be available to other teams who are interested in him, and to of course "drive up the staying price" in KC.

B) High Drama:
This is the first, consensual between all parties, SCRIPTED shot fired in what will be a strategically executed plan of saying goodbye to the 1st Messiah because the deal was never truly done, because pending trades involving Waters, Gonzales, and Cassel are somehow tied to each other, or because the 1st Messiah was a carrot to be dangled from the get-go.

I think the 1 year deal is a smart thing. It's franchise tag level pay but a tryout year.
