Schoolboys Arrested for Violent Drawings
Wednesday, January 26, 2005

OCALA, Fla. — Two boys, ages 9 and 10, were charged with felonies and taken away from school in handcuffs, accused of making violent drawings of stick figures.

The boys were arrested Monday on charges of making a written threat to kill or harm another person, a second-degree felony.

The special education students (search) used pencil and red crayon to draw primitive stick figure scenes on scrap paper that showed a 10-year-old classmate being stabbed and hung, police said.

"The officer found they were drawing these pictures for the sole purpose of intimidating and scaring the victim," said Ocala Police Sgt. Russ Kern.

The boy depicted in the drawings told his teacher, who took the sketches and contacted the school dean, Marty Clifford. Clifford called police, who arrested the boys after consulting with the State Attorney's Office.

They were also suspended from school.

One drawing showed the two boys standing on either side of the other boy and "holding knives pointed through" his body, according to a police report. The figures were identified by written names or initials.

Another drawing showed a stick figure hanging, tears falling from his eyes, with two other stick figures standing below him. Other pieces of scrap paper listed misspelled profanities and the initials of the boy who was allegedly threatened.

Parents of both of the arrested boys said they thought the boys should be punished by the school and families, not the legal system.

That is stupid. I understand that they want to avoid any more Columbines but man, there's gotta be a better solution than this.

Obviously, this is stupid, but schools in a way have to exercise extreme prejudice over this kind of thing or they'll get sued like crazy right?

I mean, what if these special ed kids really did stab and hang the other student? The school would get sued into oblivion for not taking action. Or the other kid's parents might try to make a quick buck and sue these other kids for intimidation, emotional distress or some other ridiculous grounds. (being cumbersome with legal terminology here but you get the point)

Yeah, this is dumb, but the school has to protect itself from the ridiculous legal liabilities that exist today. I probably would have reported it if I had been the principal... not had them hauled off in cuffs, but I would have reported it, both to protect myself and to have someone find out if there really was a danger.

One more reason to privatize schools. We have to do something about our legal system though it's become a behemoth that is way too powerful and costly not to mention being out of control. I am not sure where you even start with something that has become so big, powerful and self serving.

geez i would be in jail for life, i don't know how many scenes from mark for death we used to do at recess, including steve using broken sticks where the part where that dude gets is back and arm broken

This is not as insane as you guys think it is. We all did a lot of things back in the day that just don't slide anymore, but times have changed. Everyone would be bashing the legal system if that victim had been found in a pool of blood days later. No one thinks it would happen to their school or their child. This is a step that HAS to be taken seriously and will be. I'm a spec. ed. teacher, and have encouraged the police to be used in a couple of situations this year. The kids have to realize how serious this is. It's obvious from your comments they're not going to see it from the adults.

Answer to question: Nine and ten year olds are more capable of a lot of things you can think of. They are capable of killing. Are you willing to take that chance? To risk your your child's life or a friend's child because the student was ONLY nine or ten? I've seen these kids, and I know what they are capable of doing physically and mentally. They might be learning disabled, but these kids usually have great survivle skills.

The other thing we do not know is the past of these two boys. There's probably a history of violence (abusive parents, lots of exposure to violent movies, fights, etc.).

I don't know about you but I got my ass kicked plenty growing up and did plenty of ass kicking as well. That's all a part of being a kid as far as I am concerned. What pisses me off is the pussification of the American male being perpetrated by the liberal pussies in this country. To tell you the truth I have no use for any of them and feel that we would be way better off getting rid of most of our unnecessary laws as well.

The press making such a big deal out of small crap like this is part of the problem with the violence seen in the schools.

This kids doesn't think of the consequences of what they do they just realize all the publicity they will get. They think of being on tv and newspapers.

Put the paddling back in the schools, when they do something that isn't right, let the principal paddle their little asses and see how that works instead of letting them becoming stars.

The parents also need to put a little more effort in raising their children instead of the children raising themselves. Nowadays you spank your kid your taking the chance on going to jail.

I used to tell my kids, if I ever spank you and you ever say your calling the police, go ahead and call the rescue squad, you'll need it by the time the police gets here to take me to jail. I was just pulling the wool over their eyes of course, but if they ever had me locked up for spanking them, they would be going to live with their dad, I wouldn't put up with that.

One thing that makes me sick are those parent who get on tv and are crying cause they are afraid of their out of control 7 or 8 year old, whats up with that, the parents need to be beat for letting their child get our of control, I don't feel sorry for them, they don't deserve kids.
