Kansas City announced its coaching staff this week. What it didn’t announce is that the Chiefs are planning to switch to a 3-4 defense.

Under the guidance of new defensive coaches Clancy Pendergast and Gary Gibbs, the Chiefs are turning to the defense that has done so well for Pittsburgh and is back in vogue in the NFL. The Chiefs are going 3-4.

Now Kansas City is going to have to tailor its personnel accordingly. But what is most intriguing and mysterious about it is where last year’s first-round pick, defensive tackle Glenn Dorsey, fits in. Dorsey might not be stout enough to play nose tackle in a 3-4, and he might not be big enough to play end in that style of defense.

One year after becoming Kansas City’s top pick, there now are questions about Dorsey’s role.

But the changes now are coming fast and furious in Kansas City, mainly on defense.

I remember before last year's draft they were saying Dorsey aka "Catfish" would make a great end in the 3-4.

Help me make Catfish stay...perfect nickname

I admit I'm not that knowledgable on DL skill-sets. Since he may not be a good NT, is he too "slow" to be an end?

DEs in a 3-4 scheme are meant to take up blockers and allow the the rush backers to get to the QB.

This draft is deep with rush backers this year. Look for a couple taken in the draft.

Yes it is. Look for some FA acquisitions as well.

Well, he did know that Shanny wasn't set to be the next head coach of the Chiefs.

No, the fast guys in a 3-4 are the OLBs. They play hand in the dirt, standing up, and coverage.....

the end in a 3-4 plays in the C-gap area depending on play call, but usually in that area

Yeah, remember that when he is going to the Pro Bowl. If anyone is happy about this, it has to be Hali. This is a perfect fit for him.

He is a much better player than most Chiefs fans realize.

He will be freed up to make plays all over the field, and he will.

Turk and Boone make very good 3-4 ends.

Dorsey will be fine at NT, Edwards and Tank are good backups at the position.

If anyone is happy, it has to be Hali. This is the perfect defense for his skill set.

DJ should move inside where he will be allowed to use his range.

If the season were starting today, I think Brian Johnston would be given the first shot to be a starting OLB.

Carr and Flowers will be allowed to be more physical at the LOS.

The Chiefs will add some pieces, but the pieces they have fit better than some here realize.
