Damn, George was SMOOTH!
RIP George, you playah...
https://www.kmbc.com/article/sailor-...-95-1/26390291 PROVIDENCE, R.I. — The ecstatic sailor shown kissing a woman in Times Square celebrating the end of World War II has died. George Mendonsa was 95. Mendonsa's daughter, Sharon Molleur, told The Providence Journal Mendonsa fell and had a seizure on Sunday at the assisted living facility in Middletown, Rhode Island, where he lived with his wife of 70 years. Mendonsa was shown kissing Greta Zimmer Friedman, a dental assistant in a nurse's uniform, on Aug. 14, 1945. Known as V-J Day, it was the day Japan surrendered to the United States. The photo by Alfred Eisenstaedt became one of the most famous photographs of the 20th century. It was years before Mendonsa and Friedman were confirmed to be the couple. Friedman died in 2016 at the age of 92. Mendonsa died two days before his 96th birthday. |

Wow, that guy lived a long time. I'm sure the answer to this question is known, but I wonder if he ever saw that girl again?

Today George would have faced a court martial over the sexual assault of a fellow enlisted person. At minimum he would have lost stripes and at worst separated from the military dishonorably.

It's not really his fault. It was only VE day, and he thought it was VJ day.

There's a huge difference between acceptable behavior in the workplace and an in-the-moment celebration of the end of a horrible war.
I wouldn't want some random guy coming up to me at a bar and giving me a big bear hug. I'm not a fan of people invading my personal space. If the Chiefs had just won a super bowl and some stranger did that in the moment I'm sure I'd hug them back...

The problem, though, is that it was still an assault if she wasn't a willing participant. The artistic image itself is so perfect as an expression of joy at war's end that her situation got glossed over for decades. It's really unfortunate from her perspective and from history's perspective that it went down like it did. And I hate saying it's an assault because that makes it sound like much more than it is. It's not fair to people who experience much more. So that part's overwrought. But I kind of think, what if I was standing around at some historic event and some skanky hag of a woman grabbed me and kissed me, and then the picture became famous all over the world as the two of us celebrating? I wouldn't be very happy about that. This is kind of the 1940s equivalent of becoming an unflattering meme. There's also some interesting moral story here that I can't quite enunciate. We're celebrating the defeat of someone who wanted to rule and control us by grabbing a woman and kissing her against her will. It's a portent of the upcoming civil rights and women's rights battles as the next "war".

She wasn't in any branch of the service. Nurses, dental assistants, and other medical personnel wore white uniforms well into the 1980s. As for the allegations of sexual assault, she may have been kissing him first. I've been told there was a lot of partying going on after almost 4 years of war for the US. Just sayin'.

"While V-J Day in Times Square went on to become an iconic photo that was generally viewed as a celebratory and romantic photograph, Friedman had mixed feelings about it.[6] "It wasn’t my choice to be kissed," Friedman stated in a 2005 interview with the Library of Congress.[7] "The guy just came over and grabbed!" she said, adding, "That man was very strong. I wasn’t kissing him. He was kissing me."[8] "I did not see him approaching, and before I know it I was in this tight grip," Friedman told CBS News in 2012.[9]" |

I just saw that statue in San Diego last year. I didn't know who the 2 people were but I'm glad they both lived long lives.

How long before the militant left demands that statue be taken down?

Kudos to S.D. They raised $1M in 3 months to make it happen. Other than 2 members of the Public Art Committee, seems like San Diego folks like it better than a whale's vajayjay.
