Any William Jackson sightings In Leawood Yet?

Chiefs Urged to Trade for Former 1st-Rounder in Potential NFC Fire Sale

William Jackson III wants a fresh start, preferably with a scheme that he believes better fits him.

Sources say the former big-ticket, free-agent cornerback would like a new home, and the Commanders have engaged in trade talks centered around him with hopes of making that happen. There has been interest in Jackson from several teams, sources say.

With the NFL trade deadline looming on Nov. 1, the likelihood is that Jackson is traded long before then.

While Washington plays the Bears tonight, Jackson did not make the trip to Chicago.

He was listed on the Commanders' practice report this week with a back injury. A former top cornerback and starter, Jackson was pulled last week early in the Commanders' 21-17 loss to the Titans.

Head coach Ron Rivera was asked after the Week 5 game about the decision to sit Jackson, and he said, "We just decided to make a change. ...We make decisions based on the flow of the game."

Jackson told reporters that he was battling the back injury.

"I fight through it for my teammates, but you know, things happen," the cornerback said Sunday. "Just seemed better to let somebody else go in."

A first-round pick of the Bengals in 2016, Jackson signed a three-year, $42 million contract during the 2021 offseason with Washington. It was front-loaded -- the Commanders have paid about half of the deal already -- and if another team traded for Jackson next week, he would count just $3.8 million against his new team's salary cap. He has a $5 million base overall this season, but six weeks of it are accounted for.

Once a key cog in the Commanders' secondary, Jackson is not frustrated specifically with the team.

Rather, he considers himself more of a man-to-man cornerback and Washington has run a lot of zone thus far. When Jackson signed, he envisioned himself as a true lockdown corner, covering a team's top receiver.

It hasn't worked out that way.

Now, Jackson could find himself with a new home.

History says you’re right…but Veach is versatile. Given the right opportunity, I think he’s more than capable of a few surprises.

The Kansas City Chiefs are once again looking like a serious title contender. At least on offense. While they haven’t been as bad as years past on defense, the same old passing deficiencies still exist. They are ninth worth against the pass in 2022 and have missed safety Tryann Mathieu. A player like Jackson III would be a nice addition to improve the unit for a title run.

I seldom disagree with you, but it seems that I am much less impressed with the performance of the secondary than you are. The defense is ranked near the bottom of the league for defending passes over 20 yards. The secondary is young and Spags’ defenses generally get better as they progress through the season. But even with that, I think Jackson would be an upgrade & add some speed to the secondary.

Even if he would be an upgrade CB isn't at the top of the need list. If we are going to rework someone's deal to make room, I hope it's for a DE, T or WR.

As sophisticated gentlemen, we will acknowledge our disagreement and then raise a toast of fine brandy and/or Pibb Xtra as we sit in our smoking jackets in the mahogany-lined library.

We haven’t had our first round corner for 95% of the season.

It’s a young secondary and we knew that going in. They’ve absolutely outperformed expectations overall thus far and will be improving.

If Veach didn’t trust them to perform at least at this level, they wouldn’t have released guys like Lonnie Johnson.

It seems super unlikely they’d expend resources to improve the DB room at this point.

The secondary hasn't been bad at all. There has been an insane amount of perfectly played balls that just happened to be perfectly placed by the QB and the WR made a great catch. Fenton's been the only one that's gotten burnt and once McDuffie gets back that'll be taken care of.

No reason to trade draft picks for a corner.

You fix the problem with the deep passes by improving the pass rush and not allowing the qb time to make the deep throw. A cb doesn't fix that problem. Our guys have typically been right with the wrs on those deeper throws. The young guys haven't learned yet to make sure to locate the ball and Fenton has struggled some. But getting pressure on the qb is a much better fix.

We miss Mathieu? Even if we did…why would that mean that we’re trading for a CB?

Because it would be an upgrade at a an affordable price. And the secondary has not been great. Especially against the deep pass. AFCW has quite possibly the strongest group of quarterbacks that we’ve ever seen within one division.
