sooo, I might be moving to Kansas...
...from San Diego and was hoping to get some feedback.
I've been wanting to move to the Mid West for sometime now and think it is about time I do so. I've been to Lawrence, Overland Park and KC a few times and like it quite a bit. Can anyone give me a ballpark number of what the cost of a nice home is? Say 4 bedrooms, 2 baths in a nice neighborhood? What about the cost to rent a house? Lawrence seems like a cool college town to live in. I have visited a few times there and like it. So thats it...just looking for a change. Lastly, does that mean I have to convert to a Chiefs fan if I move to KS? |

I'm sorry to hear that.... but we will gladly take another Chiefs fan. The "real" ones are leaving the stadium.

Save money. Absolutely. Cost of living is out of control here. Put it this way, it will cost you $600+K to buy a 3BR, 2bath, 1900sq feet home. Minimum in a decent area. My wife and I just had our first son this past summer and we are learning quickly how expensive children can be. Also, every time I have I have been to the Mid West, the people have been tremendous. Very friendly and outgoing. One of my co-workers is from Kansas and we talked about it and he just said it was a Mid West thing. I like that. Plus, San Diego is growing like crazy. We are about to get our first 8 lane freeway here soon (practically here...final touches being finished) and I guess im just tired of the business here. Guess im looking for a change of pace in life. |

Some things to consider:
The humidity will kick your ass if you're not used to it, especially if you're older and/or heavier. Before committing to this, you might want to wait about a month and a half and see how you like Kansas (or anywhere else around Kansas City) when its 100 degrees with 100% humidity. It gets better the farther north you go, but not all that much. You get some sick ass weather this time of year - violent and destructive storms early and often. And having grown up in a small Midwestern town, I can assure you, those folks you think are so friendly and charming will be up in your business and talking shit about you behind your back in no time. On the positive side, unless New Madrid goes, you probably won't die in an earthquake, and your odds of getting greased by a wildfire or a tsunami will decrease dramatically. Prices will certainly be cheaper for most things (as will salaries). Personally, I'd head to Wyoming or western Colorado. But that's just me. |

I will say this, however, Lawrence tends to be one of the pricier towns in Kansas but it is still a fraction of what it would cost to live in San Diego. Welcome to the Sunflower state. |
