244.5 lbs Alligator Gar...with video

Video link

I am assuming it's safe for work. Enter at own risk.

This was posted on another site. Here are the details that accompanied the pic.

Quote:
Alligator Gar. 8'2", 244.5 lbs, and 44.75" girth...

Two Missouri archers won a tag-team version of gar wars at Sam Rayburn Lake, bagging a gigantic alligator gar that weighed 244 ½ pounds. It is the pending Bowfishing Association of America world record.

The giant fish is not, however, the largest of its species taken with bow and arrow in Texas.

A 2001 Trinity River gar arrowed by Marty McClellan weighed 290 pounds. The rod-and-reel world record alligator gar was caught from the Rio Grande in 1951. It weighed 279 pounds.

The biggest gator gar ever reported in Texas was caught on a trotline in the Nueces River in 1953 and weighed 302 pounds.

Gars are slow growing fish, with female alligator gars reaching sexual maturity around age 11 and living to age 50. Male alligator gars mature around age 6 and live at least 26 years. Alligator gars commonly grow to a size of 6 1/2ft and over 100 lbs. The largest recorded alligator gar cames from the St. Francis River, Arkansas in the 1930's, and weighed 350 lbs.

These are very common in lakes in and around Kansas City. Usually they hover 1 to 2 feet below lake swimmer's feet.

Well, to be fair to the fish, its species probably have altered very little in the last 100 million years.

I'm not laughing, I know they're there. I used to run limb lines and trot lines on Milford lake. Lots of big gar and snappers in there. The Republican river that feeds it is great for noodling.

I think they should have Richard Dreyfus cut open it's contents to make sure it didn't eat a swimmer. They might find more than just a license plate and a beer can in there.

Noodling. There’s something that ain’t for everyone.
I have a couple of cousins in Oklahoma that noodle, they’ve come up with fish you wouldn’t think they could wrestle out of the water. Impressive, but I’ll remain a spectator.
One of my other cousins went to Kazakhstan do’n missionary work and met her, now, Swedish husband. When she brought him back here to meet the family I was a little worried ‘bout’im. He dressed, walked and talked a little more metro-sexually than my redneck relatives are used to, not unusual for a European but still we’re talk’n try'n to impress Okie rednecks here. But when he went noodle’n with my noodle’n cousins, I knew he’d be all right.
Funniest line of the day. He, the Euro-metro-sexual fiancé, dove under water where he found a hole and stuck his hand in it then came up gasp’n for air say’n, “It bit me!” My noodle’n cousins said, “Great, next time he does it grab’im.”

And that's the exact reason I don't go swimming in lakes.

My friends try to tell me I'm crazy for not participating in lake activites but I sure as hell don't want to ever even see one of those things.

Me too. I hate swimming in lakes, ponds because I can't see what's down there. I also won't swim in the ocean.
