Online Backup\Storage Service Suggestions
As size and importance of my photos has grown it hit me that I really need to take their protection more serious. I am backing up more things but would love another options in the case of a foul up on my part or crash.
I am looking for an online backup service that could make things easy on me. I haven't really dug deep to look for something yet I thought I would drop a line here and see if anyone had suggestions. There seem to be a billion places that do this. I don't know if this is out there but I would love to be able to have a site that monitors a certain folder for external hard drive hooked up on my computer and uploads that information automatically to save me a lot of hassle. A self synchronizing type back up thing. It would consist of 25k+ photos, a lot of them in RAW and some project files. Any suggestions? |

I haven't used it personally, but I've read pretty good things about this place:

I've read really good things about Mozy, and they give you 2GB for free. If you want beyond that, it's $5 a month. Seems pretty reasonable to me. I'm actually dropping all of my pics on Flickr and letting that serve as additional backup, but that only covers pics.

I love Flickr but to get them all back you would have to download them 1 by 1. And they have a file size limit. Wouldn't be able to do RAW.

In case anyone cares, I've been using Carbonite during its 15-day free trial and have nothing but good things to say about it. VERY simple interface, reasonable price, and you don't even have to mess with it after you get it all set up the first time. If you're looking with an easy, near 100% effective service, I'd recommend it.

Heh...of course, I just tried out mozy as well, and it seems to be pretty good. Here's my summary of the difference:
Carbonite = very simple interface, not many options mozy = somewhat less simple interface, many options Carbonite doesn't do exe's and video files by default, so that may decide it for some people. Last edited by DaFace; 03-23-2008 at 08:10 PM.. |
