Do cops really put warrants out against license plates?
Or is it just a BS reason they give you to pull you over and see if you're doing something you shouldn't be doing? It's happened to me twice now in the past few months. I screwed up this last time, and gave the cop an out (and he was cool about it, no cop attitude bullshit for a change). He came to my window, told me there was a warrant out aginst my plates, and I stopped him there, asking "Is the name ..........". He said yes, and I explained to him what happened to me last time. He looked at my ID, didn't even run it, apologized, and that was that.
SO, should I call the DMV and ask WTF is going on with my plate number and why it hasn't been changed from the previous driver, or is this all just cop BS? |

I seem to remember another thread about this. It's absolute bullshit, they put warrants out against people, not cars.

Yeah, that was my thread, too. That was more of a "cops are assholes" kind of a thing. But now that this has happened twice, I wonder if there isn't something to it. I should have made the cop tell me the name of the person who the warrant was against, instead of giving him the out. That he didn't run my ID was telling as well.

but they also list vehicle information and if a plate is run that is a match to that person's warrant, maybe just the state is different or something, and then the cop has probable cause for the stop. It's not actually a warrant for the car, but it is also not B.S. |

you missed part of what I said, here - bad guy A has a warrant for whatever, they put in his known vehicle information and five years ago he had a plate that matches the one you have now, maybe from another state, maybe not, maybe even one character is off (an E instead of a 3). Then when your plate gets ran they see an associated warrant and stop you. If it keeps happening you should be able to get it updated and corrected. It doesn't happen all the time to everyone, but it's like the "no fly" list for the airports - someone has a name similar to Osama and then they get extra questioning before they get on a plane. |

It would seem more likely that he ran your plates and received info that there was a warrant for the owner of the vehicle.

What about this?
I'm with some friends. A cop follows us in town for probably 2-3 miles and then pulls us over (how long can they actually follow someone?) He then asks if he can search the persons car (she said no) He does it anyways...(is that legal). There was no reason for him to think we had anything illegal (he said he was checking for "guns, knives and bombs") Problem 2. I get pulled over this past thursday for a busted tail light lense which is covered up with red tape. He takes my license, checks it, brings it back and says thanks bye. Is it illegal even if it's covered with red tape? |

#2 I don't believe it's legal to cover a tail lens with red tape. The guy probably could have given you a fix it ticket but didn't feel like it. Consider yourself lucky and get it fixed before you get pulled over again. You will.

#1 - look up Terry search. for safety a quick "pat down" search of a person, or "arm's reach" search of a vehicle is covered. It's only meant for a quick search for weapons, not for seeds or anything else. The cop can do a more detailed search with the driver's permission, search incident to an arrest, the terry search explained above, or if the cop sees something in "plain view" that looks like a weapon, drug paraphernalia, illegal substances, or other violation. #2 - no you can't cover a tail light with red tape. oh and why can't a cop follow you? there has to be a "length of time" first? What if he's just going to the same place as you? |
