Does time really slow down for Michael Jordan?
Sort of... Theortical Physicist Michio Kaku shows two experiments on a BBC documentary called "Time" that help explain how Jordan was so clutch.

Oh hell no, don't compare MJ to Montana. Jordan was the Elway or Favre of the NBA.

I dont have sound at work, what is it saying? Sorry, I love physics and am curious as to what they are discussing. As your speed aproaches the speed of light, time slows down? That is true. The effects of gravity on time, also true. Was MJ a walking, talking, living, breathing enigmatic blackhole?

It's about the affects of adreneline on the mind's ability to slow time or preceive it more slowly.
They show a guy dropped from a 200' structure into a net. They put a watch-like device on his wrist and ask him to read the display on the ground. The number on the device blinks so rapidly that he can't read it. It's just a blur. When dropped from that height, he's able to see the rapidly blinking number far more clearly and reports that the nearly accurately (he mis-reads a 6 as an 8 and another 6 as a zero). But he's suprisingly accurate, suggesting that the adreniline helps slow his perception of time. |

They also show mice on saline, cocaine and marijana. They are previously trained to order food from a machine that will only dispense it at 12-second intervals.
The cocaine mouse orders at 8 seconds. The MJ one orders at 16 seconds. The saline one orders exactly at 12 seconds as expected. Showing how cocaine has the same affect as adreniline. |

we will never see another player as dominating, as clutch and as much of a catalyst for his team. I mean come on, he had a good surrounding team but with no MJ=no championships!

I dont buy the physics argument, but as jAZ noted, adrenaline can make time seem to slow for you.
Basically, the way it works, is that your brain is normally able to process images from your eyes only X times per second. However, during times of extreme stress when your panic fight or flight reaction kicks in, your brain kicks your perception into high gear. This allows you to process images from your eyes 2 or 3 times faster than normal, so although time moves merrily along as normal, to your panicked perception, it looks like time has slowed down. This is a survival function to allow you to see, think, and react a lot quicker to possibly save yourself. As a nice added side-bonus, this can kick in even if your life is not in danger, if your in a situation with very high stress. e.g. idiot driver swerves into your lane head-on, you get the "oh s**t" moment, your brain kicks into survival mode, and you can see the road better, time seems to slow, and you react faster.
