ESPN says Pinkel is a consideration for Washington job
Saw this on ESPN and thought I'd get the Mizzou fans' perspective on it. I know I hate it whenever journalists speculate that Pete Carroll will take whatever NFL job is open.
I pasted the part where they mention Pinkel below http://myespn.go.com/blogs/pac10/0-3...ig-splash.html Posted by ESPN.com's Ted Miller Tyrone Willingham was nearly fired as Washington's coach following the 2007 season, so know that the folks in power -- both inside and outside the university -- have been cogitating about who the Huskies next coach will be for some time. School president Mark Emmert loves his football. He was chancellor at LSU when he bypassed the authority of athletic director Joe Dean, fired coach Gerry DiNardo and lured a guy by the name of Nick Saban away from Michigan State....... Two names would be sweet music to most Huskies fans: Missouri's Gary Pinkel and Seattle Seahawks assistant Jim Mora. Both have ties to Washington and legendary coach Don James. And both would be expensive. Some might wonder why Pinkel, a finalist for the job when Rick Neuheisel was hired after the 1998 season, would leave Missouri after building it into a national power, but more than a few connected folks believe Pinkel could be in play. Of course, the Huskies will have to substantially beat the five-year contract extension that Pinkel signed last December that guarantees him $1.85 million annually. |

Scares the crap outta me. But I guess that comes with having a big-time coach in a program that has been 2nd rate for the better part of 30 years.

They'd have to buy out his contract plus give him more than $2 mill per year. But Washington has the $$$.

One of the buildings on campus is named for Bill Gates' mom, so I'm going to guess they can do some pretty good fundraising, between Gates, Allen and a few others. Seattle has some pretty deep pockets. Hell, they might be able to get money out of Warren Buffett if it means getting Pinkel out of the Big 12 North.

He has no ties to Washington other than being an assistant coach there years ago.
Big deal.

Umm, 12 years is a long time. He's strongly tied to this community and to Don James who is the Godfather of Husky football. Sorry guys, I like Mizzou, but I'm a Dawg through and through. I hope like hell we steal your coach. He was ours first.

Pinkel has done a decent job of turning MU football around. There's still a part of me though that wonders just how far he can go. Has Pinkle reached the pinnacle of his ability or can he take us even higher?
Even though I have questions about how much further he can take us, I'd be glad to keep him around at this point. He's done enough for the program that he deserves to stay. It's nice to be competitive with the better teams in the nation again. If he leaves, I think he'd done a good enough job building the program up that we could attract some good canidates. A hungry young coach who has had success HCing at Div-2 or someone that has been an assistant for one of the upper level BCS teams might be able to push us even higher.

This year they're 0-7, the only winless team in a BCS conference. They got the crap kicked out of them by Arizona. Teams like this are why people snicker at the PAC-10. Anyway they will end up breaking the bank for Lane Kiffin, which will probably be a decent hire. Even if Pinkel did leave, we just promote Christiansen and move on.

Also, let's not pretend like UW is some barren wasteland bereft of any prestige, or program history. We've won a national championship in the last 20 years, and it was under the tutilege of James and Pinkel. A lot of people don't remember the glory days of the UW football program but you can believe that Pinkel does. He was a big part of it. As far as snickering at the Pac 10, that's fine. Snicker. The conference has gotten better from top to bottom, and whoever takes the UW job is going to get the recruiting class that was ranked top 10 IIRC last year, and those kids are on the field right now gaining experience. UW will be back in the next 5 years as long as someone halfway competant is hired. Tyrone sacrificed himself to improve this program this year. I'm extremely optimistic about our future. Maybe it's just the homer in me........... |

Washington needs a facility overhaul in addition to an influx of talent, and I know some people question UW's ability to step up its recruiting until the facility upgrades are finished. By the time UW would get improved facilities in place and get recruits into their 3rd and 4th year in the program, Pinkel would be in his early 60s and looking to retire. Ain't gonna happen.

I bet some people look at dave christianson hard too. I wish Mizzou would incorporate the spread with some kind of straight forward running attack. The current offense hasn't got it done when it plays the big boys.
