Boldin willing to re-sign with Cards

by Kent Somers - Feb. 19, 2009 05:36 PM
The Arizona Republic

INDIANAPOLIS - Cardinals receiver Anquan Boldin reversed field Thursday, telling the team through his agent that he'd be willing to re-sign for the right price.

Boldin has insisted since last summer that he would not sign another deal with the Cardinals, claiming they reneged on a promise to give him a new contract.

His change of heart, however, likely won't prompt the Cardinals to rush to the bargaining table. They have more immediate priorities, including trying to re-sign quarterback Kurt Warner and inside linebacker Karlos Dansby, whose contracts have expired.

An NFL source confirmed Thursday that Boldin's agent, Drew Rosenhaus, told General Manager Rod Graves that Boldin would be willing to return if the two sides could reach a contract agreement.

Graves acknowledged meeting with Rosenhaus regarding several of Rosenhaus' clients with the Cardinals, but declined to discuss details of the conversation. Rosenhaus did not return phone calls.

"It was fairly extensive," Graves said of his meeting with Rosenhaus, who also represents running back Edgerrin James, defensive end Antonio Smith, free safety Antrel Rolle, nose tackle Gabe Watson and defensive end Darnell Dockett.

Boldin has two years left on his contract, and is looking for a contract in the neighborhood of the four-year, $40 million deal signed last spring by receiver Larry Fitzgerald.

Both Fitzgerald and Boldin made the Pro Bowl last season for the third time in their careers, but it was Fitzgerald who emerged as the team's primary receiver

Graves said the team's position on Boldin remains unchanged. "Our intent all along has been to consider a long-term deal for him at the best window of opportunity."

Graves said he didn't know if that window would be open this spring. "I think a lot of things have to come into play and have to be satisfied before we can even address that window of opportunity," he said.

That's a reference to the Cardinals' efforts to re-sign Warner and Dansby. Boldin has two years remaining on his contract, so the Cardinals will hold most of the leverage if negotiations resume.

Graves is scheduled to meet today with the agents for Warner and Dansby, who was named the team's franchise player earlier this week.

The Cardinals have made a "strong offer" to Warner, said Graves, who hopes to get an indication today of how close the two sides are to a deal.

The $9.7 million tender to Dansby leaves the Cardinals about $32 million under the expected salary cap of $123 million.

The Cardinals could gain another $5 million of cap space if they release James, as James has requested.

Graves said the team will make a decision based on what's best for the team, not any individual player.

Running back J.J. Arrington is due to become an unrestricted free agent next week. If James was released, Tim Hightower would be the only back under contract. The Cardinals likely won't release James until depth at running back is addressed through free agency and the draft.
