Three Runners die in Detroit marathon

DETROIT – Autopsies are expected after three half-marathoners died during the Detroit marathon.

Officials say 36-year-old Daniel Langdon collapsed at about 9:02 a.m. Sunday between the 11- and 12-mile markers and 65-year-old Rick Brown collapsed at 9:17 a.m., near where Langdon went down.

Officials say 26-year-old Jon Fenlon collapsed at about 9:18 a.m., just after finishing the 13.1-mile half-marathon in 1:53:37.

Autopsies are planned for Monday.

Rich Harshbarger, vice president of consumer marketing for the Detroit Media Partnership, told the Detroit Free Press emergency personnel were on the scene within seconds.

More than 19,000 people were registered to participate in the 32nd Detroit Free Press/Flagstar Marathon.




Since this was in Detroit, I bet the coroner finds that the runners were sweating bullets when they died.

Running is the dumbest form of exercise ever. I don't ****ing get how people can love that shit so much. It's not like you see physical benefits in added muscle/more chicks. You also have to put up with shin splints.

If you want to keep your heart healthy, there are hundreds of different cardial exercises you can do than run 26.2 miles in the span of a few hours.

Sorry if any of you are runners, but there's nothing I hate more on this earth than someone I know who makes a big fat deal out of their running regiment.

I am running the Marin Corps Marathon on Sunday with my 52 year old dad.

I do it because I can. I don't let it interfere with my job or family time. Many people don't know I run...

Some people enjoy bench pressing enough weight that they require a spotter so they don't drop the bar on their throat...a la Stafon Johnson from USC.

People get injured from lifting weights....people get injured from running, and some die as seen in this article. And a lot of people die and injure themselves from just being fat.

I run marathons because I can. Not because I want to work-out my cardiovascular system. I run to push my body to see if I can shave some minutes off of my last run.

...like the bench presser pushes himself to see if he can do 1 more rep or add a little more weight.


...and like the fat person seeing if they can fit one more slice of pizza in their stomach.

Exactly, it is about taking on the challenge. Pushing yourself to your limits and beyond. The sense of accomplishment when you cross the finish is pretty excellent. I beat my previous best (set in April) by almost 9 minutes. In April I would have thought that it was impossible to meet, much less exceed, that time. I am not saying it is for everyone, but don't knock it just because it is not for you.

I am not into running for fun, but you are hella wrong on getting ladies with it.. There are tons of hot women who run and want partners or hookup at the afterparties..

As for the rest, pretty much spot on.. I can sprint, no shin splints.. If I ****ing jog one of those things shins are bothering me half a mile in..

Long distance running is the problem, not running. Sprinting is amazing for your body. lose fat and not muscle. That sounds good to me. If God were real, he wouldn't have let your mother create you. And you're lucky he's not.

Dang. The dead guy beat me.

I did, however, beat my personal best yesterday in the half-marathon. I ran the Denver half-marathon in 2:06:39, blasting my old record by 7 minutes and 4 seconds. SNR, I'll pm you with the details.
